The guy makes plays almost every time I see him in D..Yet Lee already has a starting job but this guy is sort of a backup and more of ST guy...

Why isn't he used more or even starting?

Because a starting OLB has to do more than just rush the passer in obvious passing downs.

and we have a winner

yep the OLB does more than just rush the QB and the SOLB does even more. The SOLB is responsible for the TE in coverage, the RB in the flats, and has to always look at stopping the run.
Spencer is a good 3-4 SOLB, just not great. When you compare him you can't really compare him to Woodley or Matthews due to the different scheme those teams run. Besides those two Spencer is the next best. He is a top 5 3-4 SOLB in the NFL. He doesn't rush the passer near as many times as Ware, Matthews, or Woodley does.

Spencer sure isn't much in coverage and didn't shine against the run last week. So what else does an OLB need to do? ;)

supercowboy8, third best at his position in the league? Really??

What in the world does Sean Lee have to do with Victor Butler?

As for why he isn't starting when he seems to make plays when given playing time, keep in mind that when he enters games it is ussually for the sole purpose of attacking the QB, whereas the starter has to have a more balanced game. I'm not saying Butler can't handle that, but I think we do have to recognize there is a bigger picture that the coaches have to look at.

Spencer is an awful pass rusher...my goodness he is terrible. On the FSN post game show, they highlighted how once Sean Lee went out with the injury, DeMarcus Ware was forced to drop back in coverage more often and spy on Vick because they didn't have another LB capable of doing it all. So you're taking your best pass rusher away while Spencer can't even get past the RT..it's basically like a 3 man rush out there if Ware is being asked to drop back into coverage. They didn't even trust Spencer and his "overall game" to do it.

he is up there, who else is better and don't bring stats in here becasue a few more tackles or few sacks don't mean anything compared to everything a SOLB has to do. Shaun Phillips is better but not that many more are. Name me some 3-4 SOLB who are better.
Who can cover, rush, and stop the run beter. He may not be the greatest at any of those but overall he is pretty good. Its just eveyone wants another Ware and just looks a the sacks stats.
You see Woodley and Matthews who plays in a total different defensive scheme and you think Spencer should do the same.

Lets look at all the 3-4 SOLB

Pittsburgh Woodley
Green Bay Matthews
San Diego Shaun Philips (injuried)
Dallas Spencer
Washington Kerrigan
Houston Barwin
Baltimore Johnson
Kansas City Houston
Arizona Haggans
San Francisco Brooks
Buffalo Kelsay
Miami Misi
New England Fletcher
NY Jets Fletcher

That's a nice blanket excuse when the fact is that every 3-4 OLB that anyone would attempt to compare him plays in a 'total different defensive scheme'.

I've reached the point where I feel that Spencer will never be more than an average starter and therefore not worthy of the free agent dollars he'll be looking for.

If it were me, I'd be looking at options for 2012 right now.

I don't really want to have to spend the free agent dollars or the high draft pick in order to replace him, but I'm starting to change my mind on that.

He is so average at this point, it would be hard for me to give him alot of money. There will be some available in the draft, and although I would rather get another CB, we did pay Scandrick to start, so another OLB to replace Spencer is in the realm of possibility.

And I would say that since we have Butler in this system for a year, we're not forced to draft an OLB in round 1 if the obvious value isn't there.

After this past Sunday, I expect that Ryan will be back for another year and he seemed able to manufacture production out of his OLB's in Cleveland even when he didn't have stars there.

Spencer has been pretty good this season his biggest problem is that he's always going to be held to an impossibly high standard due to who lines up on the other side of our defense

Wanna know why Butler is not starting, just watch Celek's TD

In the game I watched, Spencer looked far from 'pretty good'.

I'll say that he started the season off pretty well.

Trying to think of a player on Defense not named Ware who actually did look good.

This thread like so many others seems more about calling out the usual scape goats then anything else cause you can literally single out any player on D including Butler and say the same thing

We can throw this game out then and I still haven't seen an impact from Spencer for the past several weeks.

Depends on what you consider an impact to be, up until this game we had the #1 rush D in the league Spencer was a huge part of that

maybe but he is still better than most 3-4 SOLBs in the NFL.
