Who Is Holding V. Butler From Starting?

I don't really want to have to spend the free agent dollars or the high draft pick in order to replace him, but I'm starting to change my mind on that.

He is so average at this point, it would be hard for me to give him alot of money. There will be some available in the draft, and although I would rather get another CB, we did pay Scandrick to start, so another OLB to replace Spencer is in the realm of possibility.

I'm with you, I would give him a decent average deal and if he wants big money then let him walk. Just like they did with Canty and Bowen. Don't overpay him but don't jsust let him walk away without giving him an offer.

I'm hoping Butler can be an option to start next year.

If 93 can't do it this year, he'll never do it.

The guy makes plays almost every time I see him in D..Yet Lee already has a starting job but this guy is sort of a backup and more of ST guy...

Why isn't he used more or even starting?

The same reason that is a team problem... consistency!

Why is everyone acting like Spencer has been awful? Look I know he hasn't quite lived up to expectations to say the least, but he's had a solid year. Obviously he didn't play well Sunday but nobody did.

can butler play ilb?

Victor Butler threads just aren't the same without Bob Sacamano:)

I would rather watch Butler play ILB than either Brooking or Brady James.

maybe but he is still better than most 3-4 SOLBs in the NFL.

You place almost any of those guys opposite of Ware and they all take a step up. Ware gets the attention and whoever is opposite of him HAS to take advantage of that fact.

Now, think again before you really state he is a top 3 ... and consider how much benefit he gets from Ware being opposite him.

Spencer should be better at generating pressure because HE is not drawing the double teams, Ware is... and that is a huge part of the equation. We need to look at what his cost will be, and as with all positions, look for a better option.

Just because he plays for Dallas, does not make him top of the list. He started the season looking good, but he has disappeared too often and I don't recall him making a big play when we needed it, at least not in the past several games. And we sure could have used a big play here and there from him.

Somebody correct me if I am wrong.

Neither Spencer nor Butler are the answer. Butler is just too small...the guy is about the same size as Bradie James. When they play Butler in his limited snaps, he drops back in coverage a lot...I think he's been playing ILB on those snaps. The only time I've seen him rush the passer is when they go nickel with Ware, Spencer, and Ratliff on the DLine with him.

I'd still like to see him play more though, he is similar to Antwan Barnes. Could be a great situational pass rusher if only they'd give him more of a chance.

Spencer is who he's always been. He'll make a decent play here and there, but for the most part you get over pursuit in the run game, and mediocrity in pass rushing situations. I sincerely hope Jerry doesnt feel the need to resign this guy in the offseason. Look at the job that Commanders rookie is doing opposite of Orakpo, he's feasting, ballin way harder than Spencer ever has opposite Ware

In the game I watched, Spencer looked far from 'pretty good'.

I'll say that he started the season off pretty well.
Other than Ware, the whole defense looked awful...

on a side note...Butler doesn't start because he's not any good.

That's a nice blanket excuse when the fact is that every 3-4 OLB that anyone would attempt to compare him plays in a 'total different defensive scheme'.

I've reached the point where I feel that Spencer will never be more than an average starter and therefore not worthy of the free agent dollars he'll be looking for.

If it were me, I'd be looking at options for 2012 right now.

I think this is a good plan at this point. He's not lived up to his draft pick and is not worth the money he'll likley get.
