Dang this is a good one. There are a lot of great canidates for that spot, IMO.

Moss, Irvin, Owens, Cris Carter, Harrison, Tim Brown to name a few from the last 20 years but lets not forget out great guys like Lynn Swann, Alworth, Hayes, Largent, Lofton were.

Couldn't the same be said for Lynn Swan? #1 WR on 4 Superbowl teams. Money in big games.

The problem is that Swan's individual stats doesn't measure up compared to the other guys. I think Irvin has that same problem to an extent -- at least when talking about the #2 spot overall.

That's why I mention Swann. The guy was an incredible talent and his stats aren't the same because he played on a very run oriented offense and they didn't feel the need to air it out all the time.

When I see a question of "who the best" or 2nd best, I look at it as who would a GM pick if he could choose from all of them.

I think most GMs would pick Irvin if they were building a team.

I will say if Randy Moss would have had the work ethic and head of Jerry Rice he would have easily been not just #2 but #1 all time. Heck right now if you wanted to you could probably make a good case for him to be #1 based on pure ability anyway.

There was a year or two where Irvin was the best wideout in the NFL over Rice, but long term I don't know if I can put him at number two because he did have his career shortened and he didn't get the numbers being on a team that focused more on the running game. I do think he's worthy of the discussion though.

I'll tell you one of my favorites from watching old games and old NFL films who I see rarely get mentioned in these (and probably rightfully so), I'm not saying he's #2 all time but just saying a guy I always enjoyed and like is Fred Biletnikoff.

I hate to say it because of his attitude but I'd probably have to pick Moss as the #2 of all time, there is no denying what that man was capable of, but he just kinda wasted it after a while.

Warfield, Taylor, Berry, Hayes deserve mention. I couldn't pick between Berry and Warfield. Berry is the best route runner the NFL has ever seen; esp given the time he played.

Moss was the best pure pass catcher I remember seeing play, but I wouldn't put him at #2 because of his deficiencies in other areas that have already been mentioned. I think Chris Carter or one of the old guys like Hutson or Raymond Berry.

I forgot about Carter which I lament. He deserves his role up there in the stratosphere.

To me the second best receiver might just be Kellen Winslow. He's listed as a TE but he was the first hybrid TE and was lined up all over the place. Someone recently posted S Sharpe was the first TE to be lined up outside but that's not correct.

Even with all the negatives of being a distraction and not always giving his all, if I was asked to put together a team, randy moss will be the first wr I pick. I can't think of another player who made the game look so effortless as he did.

Are you looking from a pure statistical view, or taking other things into it?
Such as what they meant to the teams overall performance, SB wins, playoffs as well as willingness to block, etc.

#2 would be a hard choice no matter what. I will need time to think about that.

Open-ended.

Swann had two 100 yard games in 16 playoff games with 9 TDs. Both were in the Super Bowl. Irvin had 6 in 16 playoffs games with 8 TDs and is still 4th in catches and 2nd in yards all time in the postseason. I also factor in that Irvin didn't have another wide receiver of his caliber to team up with like Swann did in Stallworth.

Assuming Jerry Rice is first, who would you take second? Michael Irvin? Randy Moss? Someone else?

I am working on a survey and trying to get over 1,000 responses. Thanks guys.

I would take Moss #1. If he wasn't such a headcase, and just learned to deal with losing better(I don't blame him) he would have been the best ever. Came out the gates as a rookie making everyone look like 13 year olds trying to cover a fully grown 25 year old.

He is everything you want in a receiver. Tall, Super fast, insane Vert, amazing catch radius, amazing hands. If they went into a lab to build the best elite WR. Randy Moss would be that guy, or the only guy close, ever. Weather it's the past or Today. It would be him.

Stats wise, Ill respect Jerry, and go ahead and list Moss as #2
