Any chance we could land whomever it is to be our D-Coordinator next year? That might influence Shaun Phillips to sign here in the off-season. Plus we could then be a little more aggressive in our style of play with D-Ware. I know Parcells (if still here) would curb that aggressiveness, and I have no complaints about DeMarcus, nor do I get into the Merriman comparisons. It just seems that getting someone from a staff who actually employs a 3-4 very successfully, could only help our talented Defense. I also am not a guy who bashes Zimmer. I know this Defense has not been his bread and butter over the years, so I understand his having to learn the nuances of that system. But I also think he is not under contract next year. Just throwing it out there for discussion.

Thanks Hostile. A little dis-heartening to find he spent time as a player and coach with the Rednecks, but his body of work is enough to overlook that.;)

i'm not so sure that the fact that their lb's are playing well means he is qualified to be a dc after 5 yrs as a coach.he's never been a dc, nor has he ever called the defense.if you like the chargers defense would'nt it make more since to go after the guy who calls their defense

Wouldn't you have to offer their D-Coordinator the title of Head Coach for it not to be a lateral move? And we already have one of those as well as an Assistiant Head Coach so we could not give him that title either, at least as of now.

P.S. Their D Coordinator is Wade Phillips whom I have no desire to be our head coach nor our D-Coordinator.

When the Cowboys decided not to extend Zimmer's contract (under pretext that if new H/C came in he would want his own people), I wondered if that was the true story. Did they think he would get H/C offers so why bother or is Parcells not as satisfied with Zimmer as we all believe? It's certainly possible Parcells kept Zimmer around cause he didn't have a viable 3-4 option available but wanted take a look around after 06 season if he too dissatisfied.

The better question is who is coaching that Dline and getting that much out of their talent. Castillo and Williams are among the best in the NFL and Olshansky is no slouch. Good teams can get that pressure without blitzing. The players make the coordinator look good. All the coordinator can do is put the players in position to be successful. Until we get more effective ends in a pass rush, not much is going to change no matter the coordinator.

That would be Wayne Nunnelly. He has actually wrote books about the 3-4 and how to effectively utilize stunts to generate pressure.

I can all but guarantee you Nunnelly would be pleased to work with two talented ends like Spears and Canty. We have two coaches, coordinator and defensive line coach, who are not experienced with the 3-4 and don't have a firm grasp of it's concepts. Until we get that, I would not give up on two very talented players.

That name is familiar. Was he the Head Coach at UNLV in the late 80's or early 90's?

i think the main reason zim was not extended was that jerry did'nt know if bill was coming back and if he was'nt then the new guy would want his guys.

I thought so. I'd love to get that guy as a DC. I think he was a Fullback in college at UNLV in the 70's. I seem to remember an interview with him on ESPN when he was at UNLV that was really inspiring.

Dave Campo was the defensivebacks coach from 1989-1994 before taking over as Cowboy defensive coordinator, his units never ranked below the top 10 and were twice ranked #1 overall.

Campo was a good defensive coordinator despite the opinions of his head coaching tenure and he had never been a coordinator prior to taking over the duties at Dallas.

It's pointless. To change the defense, you'd have to change the head coach. Zim is running Bill's passive 3-4 defense.
