Who is the man on our defense?

For one, I don't see the need to have someone labeled "the man". As I recall, it's still a team sport. I mean, it's kind of funny that for most of the teams mentioned, "the man" was a collection of two or three or four guys. Why can't it be that way here in Dallas?

With Roy Williams, Terence Newman, Demarcus Ware, Bradie James, and Anthony Henry, the Cowboys have the makings of a very good defense. In fact, it's already a very good defense. After filling a couple of holes and gaining some experience, it could be a great defense - with a bunch of "men".
You can still have a team, but you need a mean SOB that wont give in.

Ware will never be that guy. He is way too nice and polite.
Williams is short of shy--I don't see him being that guy either. He isn't an outgoing leader.

Bradie James seems too polite when I here him interviewed as well.

Honestly, I don't know who its going to be...

You know what, I have to agree with original poster.

We have hitters and playmakers and attacking tacklers on this team, but we don't have a MAN. We don't. Who is the leader of the team? Roy? Maybe at times, but he isn't vocal enough.

We really do need a rabid dog out there. Someone that when the game starts he is PUMPED. An AMPED straight-jacket (on the field) wearing BEAST that just attacks unrelentlessly and doesn't stop till the final gun. We don't have that right now, but we have to find it. This D' needs a shot of NASTY and quick.

Someone like Jeremiah Trotter!

I disagree about Roy. He is a playmaker and gamechanger. Just because he doesn't dance and talk trash after every tackle doesn't mean he's not.

Nobody said he has to talk trash after every hit. Just someone that isn't going to back down and will let anyone know it. We got punked pretty bad against the Commanders and thats why I started this thread. Its easy to puff your chest out when the referee is standing there. They already know that the ref won't let anything happen. Its something else to confront someone when the other team pulls a cheap shoot and your there to defend a teammate.

One one hand, I think you're wrong about needing someone like this, because talk is cheap -- even the biggest scrub can talk big.

On the other hand, I kind of know what you mean. I do think Roy is more of an enforcer than some give him credit for, but the guy I'd really pick is Bradie James. This year he established himself as a good NFL linebacker; next year he might establish himself as one of the better ILBs in the league.

I'd keep an eye on Spears, too. He's pretty enthusiastic out there.

This may sound funny, a rookie that hardly played at all is my choice...Thomas "Pepper Johnson" is a big mean guy who gets in your face. Wish we could have seen more of him this year.

You wait, this kid is gonna be a player.

Exactly, you don't have to be a thug to be a man. Its just someone that wont let his team be intimidated. I.E. - Ray Lewis.

yeah a murderer is much better than a thug

Roy is not the man. He is too nice. I never see him get in anyones face and challenge them. Roy is not the MAN.

So because he doesnt act like an idiot hes not the man? :lmao:

Whos that WR who plays for the Colts? You know the "man" on their offense who never does any stupid dancing after all the TDs he catches? Dayum his name just keeps slipping my mind................... ;)

Next time read the original thread. This is about defensive MEN. You know the guys that usually set the teams tone about how tough they will play. You don't have to act like an idiot to be tough or a man. I guess you didn't see Roy vs. the Texans in pre-season? That is what I'm talking about. Not backing down when being confronted. Did you hear that, NOT BACKING DOWN WHEN BEING CONFRONTED.

setting the tempo for the rest of your D-mates with big hits is a man in my book

Roy Williams

Those big hits were far and few in between this year. I'll never disrespect Roys game, but this year he didn't deliver too many game changing blows. Thats another story. read deeper into what I'm talking about. Its not who hits the hardest, I'm looking for that player that has no remorse what so ever about the other team. The guy that, forget it. If you have never played the game you wont know what I'm talking about.

Example, I had a teammate named Henry Craigbom. Every game, he would knock somebody out and then look at them like it was their fault for running into him. He never siad a word, ever, to the other team. He just hit players and let the other team know that its going to be a long day since you decided to line up in front of us. We feed off of him, because we knew, sooner or later it was coming. He didn't boost or brag about laying someone out, but if anybody got in our face, he was the first to have our back and we knew that hit was coming on somebody. Just to remind them that its going to be a long day. Not a thug, murderer, just a mean SOB that had balls and took pride in being a man. Tuinie, Haley, EW, LA, Butkus, Ray LEwis, Trotter, Jim Brown, Walter Payton, LT, Carl BAnks, Spikes, Cox, Porter, and many more are all made from the same cloth. We need a piece of that material on our D.

to me, it doesn't matter if the hits were few and far between, they still set a tempo for his teammates, and my definition of a man on D, is one that sets a tempo, that facet of his game will never change, and that's why he'll always be the man until someone better at setting a tempo comes along...

plus, you don't get to see how Roy Williams reacts in the huddle, or on the sidelines with his teammates, none of us do, but he seems to be well-respected among his teammates
