I do think the rat issue is worth discussing, since that's one issue all of the players (except the rat himself) seem to agree was a big problem this past season (even though I don't think it affected performance). You can talk all you want about Owens talking to Deion about the scheme, but the fact of the matter is that Romo and others did it too, and I highly doubt that was considered that big a deal amongst the players. Garrett may have been angered or offended by it...but that's ultimately irrelevant. On the other hand, you'd better believe the Werder article was a big topic of conversation in the locker room. If you're worried about the team's "distractions," that's numero uno. And that's not T.O.'s fault, whether the stuff contained in it is true or not.
Werder's article was carefully written (paradoxically) so as to conceal the fact that he didn't have more than one player source. Numerous times you'll see the expression "at least one teammate" or "one teammate told me."
He never wrote "another teammate said."
Thus, it's only logical to conclude he only had one player source.
The majority of his quotes came from "sources," which, given the fact that he identified the one player as a "player," means they aren't players.
The Witten/jealousy angle was attributed to "a source who speaks regularly with Owens's teammates." Isn't that ambiguous? The one thing we know is that this person isn't actually a teammate. It could be a coach...OR, it could be another reporter. It could even be Ed Werder himself.
My take on the one player involved is that it can't be a fringe guy. They have too much to lose. If Dallas cuts them, there's no guarantee they'll ever get another shot again. They're not going to risk their 6 figure salary to squeal on a star player...and not even get their name in the papers to show for it.
They also have no stake in the organization's performance. What difference does it make if the team wins the Super Bowl to them? I suppose they do get a salary bonus, but I doubt that's really running through their minds. They just want to stay on the roster and get a chance to play.
You do have to wonder about Carpenter. He's been acting very suspicious in general with his constant press involvement.
If I had to list suspects, they'd be the following:
1. Bobby Carpenter
See above
2. Zach Thomas
He's a veteran who has a reason to be upset about the organization he walked into. He was detached enough from the organization to squeal, but he had enough stake in the team's performance (he's never won a ring) to care enough to vent this frustration.
3. Tank Johnson
He was going at it with Ken Hamlin while bragging that he was on his way off the team. That kind of attitude makes one wonder just where his priorities were during the season.
