Ware was the only individual who i thought really stood out on the 1st team.

The DLine as a group was strong.

And I have to agree...I liked what I saw from Hoyte in the 2nd half. He's a definite PS keeper.

For people who watched the whole game -

How were Ellis' coverage skills?
He was only tested once that I can remember, on a dumpoff to McAllister. Ellis made the tackle as soon as it was caught for a 4-yard gain.

Ths Saints didn't really have enough opportunities.

Ware and Henry played the best...A notable 3rd place would be CAnty and Ellis.

This D is no joke!

For those keeping score at home: Shaun Alexander, Deuce McAllister and Reggie Bush have combined for 27 yards rushing on 12 carries, for a 2.25 ypc against our first team defense.

Our run defense should be stout this year with our size on D, if anything, teams may try and exploit us in the passing game by attacking our LB'ers & safeties. I don't think they want to mess with TNew, Henry & Glenn much.

Ware played the best tonight by far. I loved the little head shake he gave to Reggie "I'm overrated" Bush after he hit him.

The reason Carpenter looks slow is because he IS slow. He looks sloppy when he runs, almost tripping over his own feet.

With that said, I do wish Him the best of luck :starspin

That was the best defensive play of the night. Ware and Bush in the open field and Bush tries his little misdirection move and Ware just sticks his hand back and levels him. Great tackle.

Ok. I ask this because Greg Ellis' success at the OLB spot depends on his coverage skills. Now we have 2 OLB's that can rush the passer. Can Ellis defend against the pass though?

..in pass coverage and we are going to be dealing with this all season.

Opponents are not going to run on first and second downs on us..they will pass and work on both Ellis and Ware to make them drop into coverage and that is going to be our Achilles Heel.

Our safties are going to have to play well and not get injured or we will be in for some roller coaster rides in the defensive passing game this season.

I think the Key will be Watkins and his development. If he can play a good centerfield..then Roy Williams will be patroling the LOS and short zones to protect passing lanes with the LBers.

If our FS is as leaky as last year, then we are going to have all sorts of trouble guessing where to play the Lbers and SS's to compensate.

The inside Lbers are also going to get their share of pass coverage attention from the opposing offense.

With Akin playing a new position and Carp being a rookie..

Look no further than our Lber pass coverages and our safties covering the middle to know how successful we will be as the season wears on.

When you look at our defensive strength at the DL positions and the 3-4 and it's pressure combos it can throw at you..defensive coordinators will be be attacking early and often at the Lbers to keep them off balance and making them read first and not just react to slow them down.

It's going to be a chess match every week to see how this plays out for us. And injuries will play a big part in it for us.

IMO we are only one significant injury in the DL away from scrapping the Ellis Lber experiment and sending him back to the DL as a starter.

Or once Carp gets his game going, moving him out to the outside LBer position which we drafted him for because we will need the coverage skills that Ellis is going to be exposed over.

The ball really hit him in his hands, not his chest, and he just missed it. 9/10 times that should be a catch.
He is still taping his fingers like a DE, and he said that was why he wasn't able to catch the ball. I wonder if that will cause him to make a change. Maybe he will take the tape off and start thinking of himself as an OLB instead of a DE. When he truly embraces the position change it may improve his play (which already looks pretty good to me).
