Ed Hartwell - LB
http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/fa?playerId=2675
Expert's Take Hartwell is an experienced starting middle linebacker who has struggled to stay healthy over the last few seasons. However, he has been a productive player when healthy. He played mainly in the Falcons' regular defensive personnel groupings and came off the field in sub situations. He is an above-average functional athlete with pretty good straight-line speed for the MLB position. He is a competitive player with good toughness. He displays good instincts while reacting to blocking patterns. He is an aggressive, downhill player when taking on blocks. He has the functional play strength to two-gap or play out on the edge of blockers. He does not stay blocked long. However, he does struggle to change direction and is not real nifty in the box when avoiding blockers. He has above-average sideline-to-sideline range in open space. He plays under control and is a good physical wrap-up tackler. He is a functional player in space off his zone drops. He plays with good awareness and looks to re-route underneath crossing routes. However, he has limitations when matched up in short area man-to-man situations versus either a running back or tight end. He is an effective blitzer when timing up zone dogs. Overall, Hartwell is a productive starting MLB when healthy who has good value as a first- and second-down player against the run. However, durability is a major concern at this point in his career.
Alfonso Boone - DT (6'4 318)
http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/fa?playerId=2384
Alphonso Boone is a wily veteran among a youthful Bears defensive line. His experience showed as he proved productive in his limited snaps in the rotation. Late in the season following the injury to Tommie Harris, Boone's play picked up and he proved to be valuable on the defensive front. A huge player, Boone is a sturdy run defender able to hold the point of attack often forcing double teams that allowed the under tackle and middle linebacker to make the play. He is a fill player taking up his gap assignment but also still possesses enough athleticism to penetrate the backfield creating havoc with a tackle for loss or an occasional sack. Once engaged, Boone needs to extend his long, strong arms to better get off blockers which would allow him to make more tackles along the line of scrimmage. A situational substitution player to keep the front line fresh, Boone is fairly productive having a knack for batting balls and making important contributions when on the field. Boone will be 31 years old this season and is active seeing action in every game but his limited snaps will extend his career. A reserve player that is a nice fit with the talented young Bears defensive line group look for the free agent market to pass on Boone allowing him to return to his important role with Chicago.
Donnie Edwards - we all know about him
Cory Withrow - C - (Chargers)
http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/fa?playerId=2086
Withrow is a veteran offensive lineman who has excellent backup value because he can play all three interior line positions. He came off the bench in relief this season as both center and guard. He is undersized and does his best work at center, where he can rely more on mobility than brute strength. He is extremely smart. He shows an excellent feel for the game and understands good blocking angles. At center he shows very good snap-to-set quickness. He can get the ball snapped and get his first step in the ground quickly. He is quick out of his stance when pulling or trapping. He is a fairly fluid player moving to the second level. He can get to the middle linebacker uncovered and while he is not a guy that is going to lock on; he can get at least a piece of him in the hole. He is a blue collar player who shows the aggressiveness to look for blocks downfield. He will play to the whistle. He is a much better player uncovered. He is not very strong and he does have trouble when he has to block a big defensive tackle aligned on his nose. He does not have a lot of lead in his butt to get movement as a one-on-one run blocker. He does not show great initial punch in the run game. He will hit but he does not drive his feet after contact. He loses his power on base blocks. He does do a good job of sliding off double teams. He has a solid feel in pass pro, and he provides solid help to both offensive guard spots. However, he will get walked back into the lap of the quarterback versus a solid bull rush. Overall, he is a player who relies on his smarts and techniques to get the job done. He is a guy you love to have on your roster because he is a worker and he provides excellent versatility.
I'd take any of the above and a reasonable deal.
