Who Will Be Our Leader on Defense?

So you're saying that if Treyvon Diggs came back he'd have a shot at being defensive leader?
No that's not what I am saying at all and I have no idea what brought trayvon diggs to your mind as he is the polar opposite of Bill Bates.

Trayvon diggs is a gutless kitty cat that never deserves to wear the Star again

Once upon a Time before the NFL became a kinder gentler place where the size of your contract was all that mattered.

And players were very concerned for the brotherhood. Lol

There was a guy who played defense who said sacking the quarterback was like putting all the offensive players in a burlap bag and beating them with a bat.

Now I know that would be absolutely unthinkable for any of the little kitty cats we have on the team now.

But that's the kind of guy I want leading our defense.

Ok, this will not be popular, but I think that it will start the year as Dee Winters. By the end of the year, it will likely be Downs.

Kenny Clark, Quinnen Williams, Rashan Gary, DeMarvion Overshown, Caleb Downs.

It's going to be multiple like the Offense. But defensively right now you gotta say Quinnen Wiliams and/or Kenny Clark are the vet Dawgs that keep the players on that side inline. Even Rashan Gary talks about how Kenny Clark is that guy and Quinnen is just what he is, "top talent that works and produces".

We have a new coach for the defense and obviously he will be the leader off the field.

I think it's important to have a leader on the field just not sure who's going to step up and do it.
Translation - Who will be the biggest speed bump in the run defense this year?

Yep in theory this should be the first time we've been able to effectively stop the run since probably Bill Clinton was President.

But as always this looks really effective on paper but has to be proven on the field

Could be one of the big boys with bad attitude , semi sadistic against opponents.

Or how's about positional group: DE's, LB's, DT.s.

Interesting if/how it develops.

But who was going to be the force on the field that galvanizes this group together and makes them want to walk through the fire in tough moments.

Leroy Jordan Randy White Charles Haley.
Who do we have on this current roster with the talent and personality to motivate these players on the field when things get tough.

At this point I got nothing nobody's even been a cowboy very long to have established any type of presence.

Maybe Kenny Clark.

Maybe Kenny Clark.
I could buy into that.

Guys on this defense got to get mean.
We need a physicality on this defense that we haven't seen in many years.

This defense has to approach the game like their opponents have smacked their mama.

It's more than talent and more than the x's and o's

A leader on this team has to emerge that won't settle for losing and won't let any of his teammates settle for it either

We just drafted him.
Caleb Downs.
Yes he could evolve into a leader but not in Year One at 21 years old with no body of NFL work or experience.

Probably too old now but Bobby Wagner was a guy they could have gotten that would have been a great leader for the defense even though he was on the back side of his career.

I believe Bobby Wagner is still a free agent and we could probably pick him up inexpensively.

Although not a sideline to sideline cover guy anymore he is still a great tackler and locker room leader with approving pedigree who has won a Super bowl.

He could be a very valuable leader and mentor to the young players on this team as well as a very proficient run stopper even at his age.

Can't see how he wouldn't be better than the linebackers we've had as they absolutely suck

Downs might be the most cerebrally sound player on the roster.

He was very vocal last season. He said that we need more dogs.

I liked that: A new player who already sees problems and has the guts to talk about it publicly. That precious.

He is also an older player. So he should have a natural authority. At least for the younger ones on our defense.

To me he is also a hard worker, he does all the dirty work and to me is one of our cornerstones of the defense.

IDK if he is the type of guy for a leaderrole, usually DTs are not so outspoken.

Charles Haley? A leader?

Umm, no.

Yes most definitely

Where were you on another planet when we got him from the 49ers.

The man was an emotional Time bomb who made others play above their heads and were in fear of him.

Was one of the most intense competitors we ever had on the team and was the missing piece we needed he propelled us to being the number one defense in the league.

Bill Bates was a leader back in the day and he certainly wasn't the most talented player on the team but he had a heart and was tough as nails and people respected him
Earning that respect is key. Best players are rarely the team leaders. Some are but that guy, like Bates who played with heart, gave 100% every snap, a vocal leader who holds himself and others accountable is the guy players follow

In time it will be Downs but leadership is earned and that doesn’t come overnight
I agree, but it may happen sooner than we think. In the first OTA he was shouting calls at veterans. After an entire training camp, he might just have that level of respect.

Obviously Caleb, but also Overshown and/or a guy like Gary….and of course Clark and Q are vets.

I think there’s a decent chance this finally all comes together under this DC. They’ll at the very least all be on the same page. Not sure how any younger player was supposed to thrive in last years defense.

Whoever thinks Cobra Kai's "No Mercy" is the mantra to live by.
