1) 6'1 200 lbs 4.36 40

Missed final five games of 2014 with shoulder surgery. Played in started in 7 games before surgery. In 2013, converted to cornerback from safety and started all 12 games finishing with three interceptions. Started 12 games at safety in 2012. Played basketball and football in high school.High-character player with the vision and instincts you want from an NFL cornerback. I'm not sure I like him in man coverage but there is a place for him in our league. Really nice young man who you cheer for. Plays with high center of gravity. Has difficulty gearing down quickly and changing directions. Doesn't always play with feet under him. Will lose balance and footing too often. Not a quick-twitch athlete. Feet show noticeable stall before firing forward out of backpedal. Willing to tackle but not a physical player. Suffered season-ending shoulder injury in seventh game of 2014 season.

OR

2) 6'0 230 4.53 40

Played 41 career games, starting the last 23. As a junior in 2014, voted unanimous first-team All-American. Was first-team All-SEC selection and a finalist for the Nagurski Award, Lott IMPACT Trophy and Jim Thorpe Award. Led the team in tackles (103) and interceptions (3). Played both safety spots and started three games at dime back during three seasons at ***. Second-team All-SEC selection as a sophomore in 2013. As a freshman in 2012, tied for team lead with 10 special teams tackles and blocked a punt. Was rated No. 1 safety in the nation and top-10 overall prospect by 247sports.com coming out of Dutchtown (La.) High School. Became first player in Louisiana Sports Writers Association history to earn 5A All-State honors on both sides of the ball (rushed for 1,218 yards and 21 touchdowns).Average hands. Dropped easy interceptions against Texas A&M and Arkansas. Looked much quicker in 2013 than he did in 2014. Can be beaten in a foot race. Average recovery speed. Sometimes shows too much confidence in recovery speed. Gets caught peeking into backfield and can be beaten over the top after a late jump. Inconsistent route recognition. Shows some hip stiffness when asked to open up and run. Might be carrying too much bulk.

100% if the guy was great. I just wouldnt pick a guy because he broke the long jump record. Maybe they should start picking guys because of their production on the football field?

It's the intriguing athletic specimen versus the proven football player argument and I understand being intrigued by the athlete. It's definitely a hindsight argument but you have to hope that this Front Office has learned from it and won't repeat it. Especially since Colins proved himself on the biggest stage possible.

Position , tackling skills beats speed every time. Just like a crisp route runner, who knows how to get open beats a speed receiver - examples Drew Pearson, Jerry Rice... they both weren't 4.3 guys....

#2 is Landon Collins

Byron Jones didn't run a 4.36 forty.

I want the player (preferably in round 2) who is coming off major injury or suspension from drugs, DV or weapon violations. Another rehab project Jerry can take under his wing to carry on our recent but traditional halfway house of free agents and drafted football players.
Sorry but I love the smell of sarcasm early in the morning.

The safety position was “solidified” when that pick came up. FO got cute thinking we needed a hybrid position player that could jump into the slot or cover athletic tight ends in sub packages. I think the buzz word is “position flex”.

We didn’t need a traditional safety because J.J. Wilcox was our box safety. This is a position flex guy from a school that doesn’t play anybody. He was an running back the year before he was drafted. Our staff expects guys like this to not only start but thrive in key roles on our defense. Dudes that are still learning how to play football are expected to hold down spots on NFL rosters for the next 5-7 years. I don’t know what to call that...

Collins was a solid can't miss pedigree safety, but they chose the athleticism over pedigree. That's a big chance for a first rounder. Which is weird given Dallas' more recent first round picks. Solid pedigree guys from big name programs.

Is this another Collins versus Jones debate?

Seems to be the rage. I guess we can't debate Jeff Heath since we picked him up as a UDFA, even if it was unwise to elevate him to a starting role.

There is too much rueage over Landon Collins.

I don't have the hard data to back it up, but safety has to be the hardest position to draft.

Just look around at how many actual great safeties there are in the league; probably fewer than any other position.

Sure Collins had the pedigree, but he looked like an in the box safety that may struggle in coverage.

Which he did his first year until he lost 12 lbs to improve his quickness.

Just let it go, sheesh.

Collins has had a very subpar season compared to last year, from what I've been reading.

Uh, Collins was far from a sure thing. One reason, he looked slow. Two, he wasn't a "ballhawk" or whatever word gets thrown around.

He looked like a pretty solid in the box safety that came from a big school and was probably going to be overdrafted.

If anyone knew he'd have been as good as he's been, he'd have gone top 3.
