Uh, Collins was far from a sure thing. One reason, he looked slow. Two, he wasn't a "ballhawk" or whatever word gets thrown around.
He looked like a pretty solid in the box safety that came from a big school and was probably going to be overdrafted.
If anyone knew he'd have been as good as he's been, he'd have gone top 3.

Played 41 career games, starting the last 23. As a junior in 2014, voted unanimous first-team All-American. Was first-team All-SEC selection and a finalist for the Nagurski Award, Lott IMPACT Trophy and Jim Thorpe Award. Led the team in tackles (103) and interceptions (3). Played both safety spots and started three games at dime back during three seasons at ***. Second-team All-SEC selection as a sophomore in 2013. As a freshman in 2012, tied for team lead with 10 special teams tackles and blocked a punt. Was rated No. 1 safety in the nation and top-10 overall prospect by 247sports.com coming out of Dutchtown (La.) High School. Became first player in Louisiana Sports Writers Association history to earn 5A All-State honors on both sides of the ball (rushed for 1,218 yards and 21 touchdowns).

As far as drafting goes, thats about as sure as you can get on paper. That kind of production playing against the best and being coached by the best usually doesn't disappear.
Usually..... unless you are MoClay

Yeah man, I follow the draft every year. I was aware he had good accolades. I'm just telling you what was largely the consensus about Collins that year. There were big questions about his ability to play safety in the league.

I tell you one thing, being a finalist for the Nagurski award says alot. Look at the names on this list.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bronko_Nagurski_Trophy

Yep. You have to be good in college to make thst list, that's for sure. There are some duds though like Scooby (so far at least)

I guess his speed was just hard to see at this level, he wasn't the fastest guy and that knocked him down a lot. He also wasn't great in pass coverage. He was basically viewed as a "in the box" safety prospect, and a lot of people thought that style was getting passed by in favor of guys that would fit in a "passing league".

Collins is a great player, no problem admitting that. But that was the general view at the time, and goes to show that measurables aren't everything which I've thought was pretty stupid for a while now. The Giants got a steal, but he did last until the 2nd round for a reason.

He'd look good in Dallas though.

Is this another Collins versus Jones debate?
It's moot. I have a feeling that Witten will retire after this season and Jerry will panick, pull a Dan Snyder, and give away the draft to move up to get OU TE-Mark Andrews b/c need is elsewhere and Jerry's gotta have his "triplets"

The triplets never included a TE.
