Who's Faster?

so he has run 4.35 4.41 and 4.51. doesn't make much sense. he still isn't as fast as people think he is. averages out to 4.4's.

Hester ran a 4.35 at his Pro Day according to NFL Draft Scout.

Most pro-day times are pretty worthless. They're run on so called "fast tracks" that inflate a player's time. NFL scouts/gms use a method to adjust them to a more realistic time.

Also, just to throw some stats out there...

Punt Returns:
Hester - 41 returns for 638 yards and 4 TDs (15.6 YPR)(9.8% TD rate)
Ginn - 64 returns for 900 yards and 6 TDs (14.1 YPR)(9.4% TD rate)

Kick Returns:
Hester - 40 returns for 1019 yards and 2 TDs (25.5 YPR)(5% TD rate)
Ginn - 38 returns for 1012 yards and 2 TDs (26.6 YPR)(5.3% TD rate)

All signs point to Ginn being just as dangerous of a return man as Hester. I know this thread is about speed, but I thought it's be interesting to compare their career stats.

Well still, wouldn't that be the case for when Ginn ran too? That's the best way for us to compare their speed is at the pro days because Ginn didn't run at the combine. So if Hester runs a 4.35 at his pro day and Ginn runs a 4.38 (low of 4.32) then we can say that they're pretty much equal in terms of speed.

You can not compare the two until Ginn actually runs healthy. However, I believe both ran track. There may be opporunity to check splits on 100s and get an idea that way. Would certainly be more accurate.

On the track and on the field, Ginn is faster.

Hester probably has better cutting speed, though.

Yamon Figurs beat Hester head to head in a track meet in high school.

lol, that's cause Figurs ran a low 40 of 4.28, which is a tad faster than what Deion ran I believe. And that wasn't on a "fast track" at a pro day, it was at the combine. His return stats are also just about identical to Hester and Ginn's. If people aren't sold on taking Ginn in Rd 1 but still want that explosive return potential then Figurs would be a great guy to look at late on Day 1 or early on Day 2. You just have to wonder how much he'll contribute at WR with only 23 catches as a senior.

I can't find splits, but Ginn ran a 10.5 in the 100 and Hester ran a 10.42

Those are the best times each player has? 10.5 is not all that fast to be honest. Justin Gatlin just ran the 100 in 9.76.

Well it is a little unfair to compare Ginn and Hester to the fastest man to ever walk the earth lol.

Ginn's 10.5 was from when he was in high school. He didn't compete in track at Ohio State.

Also, Hester's 10.42 was wind-aided.

And both times are very mediocre anyway. A couple guys at my high school ran a 10.5 100m.

Just for fun, Roy Williams (not ours, obviously) ran a 10.5 at Permian, I believe.

None are like Newman's time, or the WR at Kansas City, or the old Michael Bennett, or the guy at UT right now.

But to answer the question, I think Ginn is faster than Hester. He's truly "special fast". Hester is good, no doubt. But he got a lot of great blocking last year, too.

unofficial forty times...

Devin Hester - 4.35

Ted Ginn Jr. - 4.32

aardvark - 3.93

I rule by a snout!!

I think Hester's game speed is unbelievable. I watched him in college and couldn't comprehend the blur running past me! I watched Ginn Jr. as well and he was pretty fast!

Ok, I've gone through and done all the calculations and Asafa Powells 40 time would be right around 4.08.
