Alright posters let me ask you a question....

Who is faster when completely healthy Devon Hester or Ted Ginn Jr.?

I would have to go with Hester by a very slim margin while both are explosive Hestor just makes it look too easy...

It would only be fair to compare college tape since Ginn Jr. hasn't reached the NFL yet..
devin hester is the fastest man alive!!!!!!!!!!

Ok, I've gone through and done all the calculations and Asafa Powells 40 time would be right around 4.08.

When Powell set the world record in the 100 meters, his running time for 40 yards was 4.25 seconds.

i don't know who is faster but i would suspect with his track experiense if you lined them up ginn could out run him. but football speed is a tad different. and hester has more than just speed. he has "it" when it comes to returns. he see's the field very well and seems to always make the right move to find the seem. lots of guys can run fast but can't play football. hester is special at the return game and thats not all just speed

Thats not taking into account reaction time to the starting gun (which is counted as .100) so that already drops the time to 4.15. Which I'm fine with, I just took the top splits for the first 40 meters on record assuming Powell could run similar times. I guess the absolute fastest anyone could run the 40 (based on current track records) is 4.08.

Sorry, but, what's the point of this thread again?

The only way to truly tell is have both of them at 100% health running side by side in the best of 7 heats.

But please, speculate away.

I don't know if that can be true.

"In 1988 Ben Johnson ran a then world record of 9.79 seconds to win the Olympic Gold medal. Subsequent breakdowns of his 'roid induced run timed him as he reached the 40 yard mark. (By the way his times at 50 and 60 meters were faster than the current world records at that distance.)

His time? 4.38 sec" Source

Ben was always the best starter among sprinters and unbeaten on the first 60m. so i can hardly imagine that powell would have taken 1.3m away from him on the first 40 yds when his endtime is only 0.02secs better then Johnson's.

4.29 was what was said during the combine on NFLN.

Yep but you also have to consider that it was run in 1989 and the NFL didn't start using any electronic timing until 1990.

??? Several guys run faster than this every year at the combine. What's your argument?

My point is that i don't belive that Powell ran 4.25 on the first 40yds when he broke the WR 2004. I wasn't aware of the fact that my posting is this hard to understand.

Actually, when you've posted that the world Johnson's time was 4.38, and therefore someone else's time can't be faster based on the "fact" that he was a fast starter and was the world record holder at one point...even though several college football players do so every year at a well-organized and electronically timed event...

I was capable of comprehending what you wrote...it was just a weak argument. Whether or not his recorded time was accurate or not is moot.

I thought perhaps you meant something else. Sorry to have disturbed you.

Not another who's faster thread....

Our last one ended badly.

Yeah.

Mods, shut this thread down immediately before Alexander objects again.

I'll get to work on a "Greg Ellis Sucks" thread that he'll happily approve of.

No, that was Powell's running time for 40 yards. His reaction time was not included.

And the fastest currently possible 40-yard time -- based on the fastest first 10 meters ever, the fastest second 10 meters ever, the fastest third 10 meters ever and 65.76 percent of the fastest fourth 10 meters ever -- would be 4.15 seconds.

That article is incorrect. Ben Johnson's running time through 40 meters was 4.24 seconds. He had a reaction time of 0.13 seconds, and his total time was 3.80 for 30 meters and 4.66 for 40 meters. That makes his running time 3.67 seconds for 30 meters and 4.56 for 40 meters. Forty yards is 36.576 meters. He covered the 30th to 40th meters in 0.86 seconds, which means he covered the first 6.576 of that in 0.57 seconds, putting him at 4.24 seconds at the 40-yard mark.
