I really don't understand all the freakin' out over our WR situation. At least we have all of our starters ready to go in week 1. I'm not saying that there isn't a chance we'll bring in another WR via league cuts or a trade, probably Ball or Oglesby, but so what if we don't.
Injuries happen all the time...these guys are dinged up, not out for the season. MIles Austin will be back; Hurd will be back; Stanback is not a starter, so playing WR if needed in a harness is not a huge deal...you put him out wide, someone has to cover him, and Crayton or TO run the slot...plus we have two nice targets at WR, two more at TE, and a new weapon in the receiving game in Felix JOnes. (BTW, STanback should not return kickoffs with a bad shoulder...Felix Jones should).
Why would we keep guys that we'd want to cut (JEfferson/Amendola) if everyone was healthy? Why would we let guys at CB or OL who have real potential get cut and move on for two bums that belong on the practice squad and have almost no chance of being signed to any team's 53 man roster? Too much panicing.
These things happen, and sometimes you are thin at a position for 2,3,4 games. Suppose Hurd and Austin were dinged up in the middle of the season? Would we be freakin' out to cut quality players to bring in WR's off the street or to make some huge trade for disgruntled guys off other teams who by the time they learn our offense and develop any chemistry with our QB would be competing with the guys who come back healthy from being dinged up?
Maybe we bring someone back; maybe Glenn is getting in shape in case we have a serious injury to TO or Crayton...maybe we'll make a trade for a WR. However, I don't see it happening at all, and I certainly don't see any move affecting our first couple of games. This is the NFL...injuries are part of the game. Thank goodness we have TO, Crayton, and Witten in perfect health right now.
I, for one, think we'll go into the Cleveland game with the guys we currently have at WR and that we'll weather the storm until Hurd or Austin come back healthy. This is actually a golden opportunity for Stanback to show us something if we even decide to line up with a 3rd WR in the game.
There's no reason to panic or think that we should have cut a better football player for the likes of Jefferson or Amendola. I expect we'll get very close to 100% of whomever we targeted for the practice squad. I don't see anyone we cut as a serious contributor to anyone's 53 man roster...that would not have been the case with an OLman or one of our DBs.
