cowboys are the biggest thing in the NFL and possibly all sports.

When these guys cover the cowboys they get way more exposure than they would with other teams, and with all that attention their egos get affected.

They misinterpret the attention the team garners as attention for themselves and viola, guys who think they are much better than they are and egos to match their delusions.

I live in Connecticut, and I'm exposed to the Boston/New York media.. and really it just pales in comparison to Dallas' media covering the Cowboys.

I really don't understand it at all either, because you guys down in Texas are just a much friendlier bunch than us in the Northeast. I've taken trips down there and it almost seems like make-believe land. Everyone is so cordial and friendly, including my last trip to Texas stadium when I had multiple people buy me beers just for the fact that I travelled all the way from CT to see the Cowboys.

I tend to agree with the idea that these guys have huge egos. Even so, it'd be nice to throw in someone that actually reports on legitimate football information rather than gossip news and writing shock headlines for the hell of it.

This offseason, moreso than others, it has seemed to be even more apparent.

Journalists have a responsibility to be critical of the team they cover.

The Cowboys haven't won a playoff game in 12 years. Where is the reason for positivity?

Given that the past decade has featured far more downs than ups in Dallas, how can a critical journalist be anything but negative?

Good question. I don't know. Maybe they're soccer experts who really suck at covering real football. It's impossible to know exactly.

There's a difference between being critical and acting childish.

Well for one, I'd hope they'd be more thoughtful than that. The Raiders have won a playoff game since we have... Are they better off than we are?

For me, forget the positive/negative slant. No one is asking them to be cheerleaders. I'd just like some reasonably intelligent writing. The Washington Post has some very good writing, whether they're enthusiastic about the team or not. Meanwhile we get garbage like JJT and JFE put out that isn't fit for the bird cage.

I agree that monikers such as "Coach Cupcake", "Mr. Fix-it", and "Coachable Wide Receiver" are both sophomoric and indicative of limited imagination.

But, given the past decade, much of the negativity is legitimate and warranted, in my opinion.

They have a responsibility to report the facts and not be part of the story.

And the story over the past decade has been negative for the most part. Do you not agree?

With the people you are talking about its simple economic considerations for them, they perceive there is security and popularity for them in being negative about the Cowboys at this time, when it becomes lucrative to be positive about the Cowboys they will change their tune (regardless of the team winning or losing). Its perfectly alright to make and analysis or give an opinion that is less than flattering, but some of these people continuously come up with analyses based on their preconceived negative opinions because they believe that will get them exposure in the larger media (more lucrative).

If I were Tim Macmahon, I would bag that head of mine and learn something about the game of football before talking like I knew something about football.

Don't get me started on JJT. He might read this and come out w/ an article crying about why fan's just don't understand football journalist these days.

God forbid we give him a platform to cry from. :(

Bingo.

That's it for me, too.

I don't see the skill, the talent, or even the effort.

Dallas-area journalism is taking it on the chin, but truthfully, sports journalism nationwide has slowly been following the Twitter path. Namely, down the drain.

It's sad. Sports journalism used to be an art form--informative and insightful. Now, NFL fans are many times lucky enough to have six words strung together which 'describes' a team's practice.

We all live in the greatest technologically advanced communication era in human history and news is commonly transmitted as soundbites and abbreviations. To paraphrase Jack Nickelson (sp?) in the original Batman: "This industry needs an enema!"

The Cowboys performance is not relevant when it comes to reporting facts. The story will write itself and IMO the reporters do not need to add their critical opinion.
