Why aren't movies funny? Blame the comedians

Someone told me yesterday that they are filming a Pink Panther 2 with Steve Martin. I thought they were kidding, but it is there on IMDB. I never saw the first one because the previews looked so bad. I have yet to speak to anyone that did watch it. That pretty much is the prime example of Hollywood and their approach to movies. There are good movies out there, but you have to search to find them.

A prime example of Hollywood waste. A movie that did nothing and no one cared for, yet they're going to waste all of that money to create this drivel.

Jesus people, read a book and get a new idea.

I couldn't at all believe Harvey Keitel as Jack Crawford. I don't dislike him, but he just didn't fit. Scott Glenn played the part perfectly.

That Feinnes guy was ludicrous as Dolarhyde. A weird put on voice, scrawny, (compared to the book character). I understand they can't follow the book too closely in some ways, but jeez, try and match the main character somewhat.

I like Ed Norton, but I wasn't impressed with him either. The director was definitely lacking, too, given the over acting of Hopkins, so he probably gets some of the blame for the bad acting.

No one really stood out as characters, and that's because the movie was made to continue the Hannibal money train and not because someone really liked the Red Dragon story. DeLaurentis was angry he let go of the rights after Silence of the Lambs did so good. Funny you say it turned into SOTL, because that's what influenced him to regain the rights. He was trying to make a copy of a successful product.

Glenn > Keitel (for this movie anways) lol
Feinnes worked for me but I have no reference.

Sometimes I believe that movies should follow the book MORE... so I hear ya.

I think Norton is a great actor... but it seems that he cant do it all... he is only so versatile... This movie didnt fit him... and a more recent Hulk didnt fit him either.

Like I said... imagine Hannibal Lecter in a real chess match against a Norton type.... thats what I was hoping for.... they gave you a little of that and let it go.

Just out of curiousity... I didnt care for Hannibal... but they put Julianne Moore in what seemed like a no win situation yet I THINK that she did the best she could with and pulled it off.

Your thoughts on that?

Hollywood has to be one of the most wasteful businesses in the history of mankind.

You make some valid points.

Too many times they are going by the "throw it against the wall and see what sticks"

I would not be suprised if someone admitted to "yeah we just released it, it wasnt very good, we knew it" "we just wanted to see if we could get lucky"

Now... while that does happen.... its not a good strategy.

Actually.... I know that Coppola admitting to making Godfather III because he was broke and needed money to save his vineyard. He admitted to rushing it after he was granted more time. Its sloppily done. Too bad because the story was interesting. The Scandal that is... not the Michael Corleone story itself.

I saw an Eddie Murphy interview and he said that he is tired of making movies and wants to go back to stand up

He probably should have started before making his newest movie "Meet Dave". That looks like refried crap.

I didn't mind it. It doesn't stack up to SOTL, but it's ok. I like Ridley Scott too. The story itself was actually less off the wall than the book, because they changed it for Jodie Foster, but she bailed anyway.

The actors in it were fine, though I wasn't crazy about Ray Liotta, everybody else did their job fine. Mason Verger is funny, I can't help but think of Fire Marshall Bill when I see him.

I can't remember the last really funny movie I saw. What I don't like is when stupid passes for funny. That REALLY irks me.
You must HATE Mel Brooks.

I have always appreciated movies with subtle humor in over the outrageous Will Farrel type of comedy.

Sideways was one of my favorite movies ever and the theatre I watched it in the people were rolling laughing. However, people that watched it on DVD or on HBO thought the movie was boring. Paul Giammati never cracked a joke thru the whole movie but he and Thomas Haden Church just made me laugh with their antics.

I do like Jim Carey tho. And his Ace Ventura and Fun with Dick and Jane movies were great. Will Farrels Ricky Bobby character had some funny parts but it really was just dumb. The upcoming StepBrothers looks like a spin off teh same movie.

Anybody that did not laugh at Borat must not have any humor in their body. My niece saw the movie with my wife and I and she was totally lost. Had no idea why everybody in the movie was laughing or why my wife and I were crying hysterically from laughter. I have to admit, there were parts of the movie that had me a little uncomfortable but still it was hilarious. And when Sasha cohen has his characters going on his HBO, I find those so funny I can scream...

Borat was horrible. Perfect example of stupid trying to be funny. It was not witty or clever, just the same crap over and over and over again. Repeating the same thing from scene to scene is not funny, at all.

You mean tired of consistently being at the bottom of the box office take lists?

What was the last good movie he was in? They all seemed downhill after Coming to America.

If you're talking about any good movie, I would say Dreamgirls in '06. If you're talking about any good movie in a leading role, I would go with Life about ten years ago. If you're including voiceover/animated good movies, the original Shrek comes to mind around the same time. I have to agree with the vast majority of his filmwork since the 90's should be canned and buried.

If it was so horrible, why did you watch every scene?

Because I am not one to stop watching a movie in the middle. I like to watch as many movies as I can, and there have been maybe 2 I have not finished once I start. I've certainly seen worse.

Life was probably the worst movie I saw that year. Absolutely terrible in every way imaginable. One movie I definitely wish I HAD left early.
