With the rumor that Spears and Carp are being shopped at the Senior Bowl, why aren' they shopping Ellis around? Even he thinks his time is limited in Dallas. We could package him and get..........what?

If he stays and starts next year, does that mean Spencer is a bust?

Because Phillips likes the job he did on the defense this past season and said he expects to have Ellis back? Ellis being insecure did not affect how he played the game, was it annoying yes I'll give you that but he came in and did the job.

But Spencer is Wade's guy. He needs to step in and start. Ellis won't repeat this season next year. Once he was figured into the game, most teams were able to handle him. HE wasn't the dominating factor Ware was. Maybe Spencer can be.

You can't move Ellis until you know Spencer is the real deal. And at this point we aren't going to get great value for Ellis, he is getting up in age, and injuries are still a concern. Simply let him play out his contract.

Get rid of him while he has value. He had more sacks this year than ever in his career. That was mostly because of Ware, but his value will never be higher. Package him in the deal to Detriot and Let Spencer come in and take over.

In a system that rotates players in and out we need both. Wade himself said he expects Ellis to be back and if that is the case then Ellis will be back. He had the best season of his career without being able to play the entire season and will no training camp. I don't think it is a given he can't have the same type of season.

Even if Spencer shows he is the real deal and gets more time Dallas will continue to rotate players in and out and as you said Ellis value on the market is not as good as his value to the team.

Ellis' season contributed greatly to Ware's success this year. With that being said, I think Jones/Wade would be crazy to get rid of him... aging or not.

you don't just send 12.5 sacks down the road. and there is no reason to believe he won't be a good player for us next year too

No Spencer is not a bust, the guy was asked to make a position change and not quite the beast Ware was, even Ware said that it took him a year to figure it out. Spencer needs more time.

Besides, Ellis is over 32 years old and is coming off of an achilles injury. I don't think his trade value would be very high, a 6th or 7th rounder at best. I would rather keep him than gamble on a 7th rounder making our team. Plus, I don't think his cap value is very high, I could be wrong.

He would help us next year, no doubt about that.

Agreed - I really don't understand why one would wanna get rid of Ellis. At his age, we are getting a lot of bang for the buck.

DING DING DING We have a winner. A team is best served with a mix of youth, experience and potential.

You need reasonably priced veteran guys. Look at the Pats.

I love Ware, Ellis and Spencer rotating at two OLB spots.

Why cut loose Ellis to make room for Spencer to start?
Why all this concern with Spencer starting to make our draft look good?
Is this a friggin beauty contest?
Oh no SI's gonna give us a bad look back grade on the 2006 draft cause Spencers not starting. Who gives a fecal matter!

TO HAVE THE BEST TEAM POSSIBLE YOU'LL WANT TO HAVE THE BEST PLAYERS PLAYING.

If that means our 2006 1st rd draft pick is playing off the bench, so be it.

You do realize injuries do happen from time to time in this game.
You'd rather cut Ellis, just to start Spencer.
And then when Spencer goes down? Burnett or Carpenter has to start on our strong side.
Well at least that would make one of our other past drafts look better.:laugh2:

His statistical output still doesn't help his value that much. You don't think teams in need of a pass rusher don't know what Ellis is when he isn't playing alongside one of the best pass rushers in the game? When Ellis was the premier pass rushing threat he was an 8 sack guy...good against the run and all, but not an elite pass rusher.

Couple that with the fact he is up there in age, why would anyone even deal a 1st day pick for him.

You'd probably get a 5th or 6th rounder AT MOST right now. Id rather just keep him around and let him play out his contract.

We really need for Spencer to step in and dominate. He is a first round pick and needs to contribute right now, or he is a BIG BUST.

He has had one year to make the position change. He should be another Ware right now. Sitting him behind Ellis, who is really good, but not getting any better, is a waste of a 1st pick.

Next year is Spencer's second season. He either needs to start, or we need to look elsewhere.

I agree with your strategy but you aren't thinking realistically. Teams are not stupid. They know we would be dumping him so they would give us nothing for him. If anything, we would get nothng in return and lose a guy who could have helped us.
