Why Dallas May Be Down Two DE's In Week Two

We already know David Irving is facing a four game suspension. His absence could hurt the Cowboys the most in week two, when they play at Denver.

Why? I was looking back at my 2016 draft guides trying to find scouting reports on Charles Tapper. I forgot that he carries the "sickle cell trait"; which could prove dangerous when he plays games at high altitude. Dallas plays Denver in Colorado.

The condition nearly cost former Steelers safety Ryan Clark his life a few seasons back and raised awareness on the condition. Bengals defensive tackle Geno Atkins (I believe it was him) also carries the trait; and his snaps were closely monitored the last time they were in Denver.

Tapper may only be available in a limited role; if at all, making Irving's suspension all the more harmful.

I think he plays..

maybe limited snaps like the rest with the altitude.

but it's unlikely he misses a game becuz of cycle cell anemia.

I mean 75% of the players are black in the NFL.

And of that percentage..

it's probably a high percentage with the condition.

Not too worried about it. As already stated, sickle cell is not at all uncommon amongst African Americans and I'm sure other players have it. Unless he is in the lower percentage of severe cases then it should be a non issue.

I also think lots of IV fluids and possibly meds prior to arriving in Denver can help minimize the effects.

Not sure why exactly the OP thought of this or whether or not to not treat it as a big deal as most people have mentioned that many players in the NFL have it, but a heck of a lot of articles about Tapper leaving games due to exhaustion from sickle cell come up when you google "Charles Tapper sickle cell." Surprising considering there probably aren't very many articles in general on this guy since he was pretty much a nobody in college and the NFL.

Speaking of Charles Tapper, I'm hoping the guy can turn into a solid player for us, but he definitely has a lot of red flags that make me uneasy. Is anybody still not concerned about his mysterious back condition that he was diagnosed with after we drafted him that caused him to miss his entire rookie season? There was no apparent injury so I don't even know how exactly they detected it. And if he had it since birth and was able to play all through college, why did it cause him to miss his rookie season, and why is he okay to play now? Top that with an apparent bad case of sickle cell (bad enough for it to get mentioned so many times despite many players in the NFL having the trait) and the fact that he didn't put up big numbers because of supposedly being in a college system that didn't maximize his skillset. Not to mention, he's the most out of shape looking fastest DE in the draft I've ever seen.

They detected it because he woke up one day unable to get out of bed.

It's a birth defect. I have no idea what it means long term but at least now he knows he has it and it can be managed. It's why Tapper is 20 lbs lighter than he was last year.

Why it didn't show up in the pre-draft medicals is the real question.

He'll break Strahan's sack record as a rookie.

It's amazing how many knuckle-headed players screw up their careers & the Boys' chances just to get high. We used to say, "Let's go get stupid" when we got high. I wasn't risking an NFL career, though. That's just what it is-stupid. Now, it's David Irving. Here's hoping they give Keionta Davis, DE, Chattanooga a look, once he clears medical due to a bulging disc in his neck. Davis was a conference DPOY last season. Looked pretty good at the Senior Bowl.

The problem at altitude is people do not breathe properly which leads to hyperventilating which leads to thickening of the blood. Hopefully our training staff is aware of this and has many tanks of oxygen on the sideline.
