I prefer to envision Tapper being able to physically withstand his physical limitations and remain healthy throughout the year, although it remains to be seen if he's destined to do so. Maybe losing that excess weight that he did will help him to withstand his back problem. Let's hope that's the case, rather than assuming he'll fall victim to another disability to play. He's capable of greatness, when healthy. As a fan, I'd simply be inclined to wish him good luck and hope for the best. It's way too early in his career to give up on him just yet, imho.

They detected it because he woke up one day unable to get out of bed.

It's a birth defect. I have no idea what it means long term but at least now he knows he has it and it can be managed. It's why Tapper is 20 lbs lighter than he was last year.

Why it didn't show up in the pre-draft medicals is the real question.

He'll break Strahan's sack record as a rookie.

It's not a birth defect. It is a trait that provides considerable protection against malaria. People born with this mutation were more likely to survive in areas where malaria was prevalent.

That's not a birth defect.

I'm talking about the back condition he has. The pars defect.

Not really a birth defect - pars is pretty common among people who deal with back issues. Estimated 5% of population has the condition.
