It was a short sighted move considering Ehinger was about to be cut and you had Ward under cheap control for 3 years during a time that a couple of your DBs were about to enter FA. The kid was better than Olumba in '18 and was slated to make the team before the trade and had the profile that KR wanted. It was a weird move and we lost this trade badly.

But you do not keep players if they are bubble guys just because a player is going into FA the following year. Both players were heading for the PS anyway. Olumba was playing better, as Ward made more mistakes in the PS games. He may have made the PS also. A team can get these guys (at the time the way they played) in FA or the draft the following year.

Again this happens quite often, as teams trade for players about to be released as they do not want to lose them from the waivers list.
I do not blame them at that time. I think most are looking at this from hindsight as usual. I would bet if one were to go back you would not find many, if any poster complained about this at the time.

How do we know Ward would have been any good after the Cowboys coaches got through with him?

Because we don't have an eye for talent on the defensive side of the ball.

B/c he wasn't going to last on the practice squad, and he wasn't going to play over Byron, Chido, Brown and Lewis.

That 1,000 snaps qualifier is pretty interesting...borderline ridiculous. I don't think there are many players in that category. Byron only played 917.

It's yet another shining example of screwups under the Garrett era. Yesterday's game was a reminder of several.

Travis Kielce, arguably the best TE in the game. But we drafted Gavin Escobar instead.

The aforementioned Ward, while we stare at a secondary that doesn't make plays facing yet another rebuild, while Ehinger never played a snap for this team.

And then seeing JJ Watt out there and being reminded of passing on his brother, a first team All-Pro, for Taco, a 2017 1st round pick that we got nothing out of.
Would you have traded Lewis, Awuzie or Byron Jones for an O-Lineman at that time?

No, would you?

Of course not, but the reality is we had a big problem with O-Line depth at the time, and needed to trade somebody to get it. An undrafted free agent CB buried on the depth chart seemed like a better choice.

They misevaluated. Clearly.

They didn't realize what they had, and their 'depth chart' was based on draft status and nothing more. And as for as that "O-line depth", their big issue was at center with Frederick, and they traded for a lineman who didn't play center. And they had such little regard for Ehinger, the player that they traded for, that they cut him during the offseason when they were able to have huge rosters. That shows that they clearly did not want the guy.

Just a huge blunder.

In hindsight, yes, at the time, no. Except for the fact they had no idea what they were doing, as the case in many things. :lmao2:

I see it as another draft miss. They trade the wrong player or draft the wrong player (Watt vs. Taco type thing, or Thornhill vs. Hill)

But still other teams do this as well, just as not as much as Garrett teams.

Pay back for stealing Irving from them

You can look at this one of two ways:

1. The Cowboys roster is so deep and talented that we let players like Ward go

2. With better coaching, this talented roster could be where the Chiefs are now.

Even if Ward had stayed, he wouldn't be playing. He would be buried behind the other dbs. I'm glad he got the opportunity to shine somewhere else because we wouldn't even know who he is had he stayed in Dallas.

Weve seen it over and over since Marinelli got here. Our DBS go elsewhere and have successful careers. Our coaches sucked.

Seen it even before him.

Newman found the fountain of youth once he left here.

Hell, could of even played on Saturday if they re-signed him lol.

We certainly can't get the position right. And we haven't since that iIl-advised trade up for Mo Claiborne and the big free agent signing of Carr. Claiborne never became what we'd hoped for, and Carr mpnever played up to the cost. But both left and have had decent runs elsewhere, Carr especially has been solid and well worth what the Ravens paid him. Funny how that worked out? Carr was good with the Chiefs before coming here, mediocre in Dallas, and then good again after leaving. Like another Joey Galloway, except on defense.

But follow it up with Jones, Awuzie, Lewis, and Brown, in addition to this trade and it seems like no matter what scheme/coach/players we try, the results continue to disappoint.

Yes they did, but with undrafted rookies in their first training camp, that's not unusual. Those guys aren't the focus of the team in training camp, and they are buried on the depth chart. They almost have to make your eyes pop for a team to take notice. Hell, all 32 NFL teams misevaluated him coming out of college. As they did with Romo.
