Why did we keep 7 CB's and 5 Safeties

Acting like kelvin wasn't a bust or a headache off the field
I never said he wasn't a knucklehead but as I said in another thread, had Dallas traded Joseph along with draft pick swaps to grab someone like OG Kevin Dotson from the Steelers (Rams traded for him yesterday) then at least that would make a little more sense.

Defensive backfield is perennially decimated at the end of the season; scrubs back there getting torched. I'd much rather have an overabundance of them than linemen.

In this scheme Bell is essentially a linebacker so keep that in mind. You can count Mukuamu as a corner or a safety and Wright is headed to IR tomorrow.

And odds are Lewis is gonna go on the return eligible IR, so it's really 5 and 5
That really does not make much sense. Unless there is some new rule or changed rule. Or maybe I need to understand it better.

if he stays on PUP he misses what 4 or is it now 6 weeks, then they can activate him to practice or then move him to IR.
I guess by doing this, and on short term IR, they can activate him at anytime, rather 2 weeks or 10 weeks, or not at all.

Maybe that is the difference.

Wright and possibly Lewis will go on IR to return tomorrow morning. Also some trades could still happen, unlikely but possible. A guy like Rush could be a target for Cincinnati or New England which either don't have a backup or a viable one. Same could be said for Gholston and or Gallimore with a number of teams need DL help.

Still rumors about Dallas trading for Conner from Arizona who needs help everywhere.

53 won't be finished until Thursday.

seems like overkill at the corner position

Cornerback

  • Trevon Diggs
  • Stephon Gilmore
  • DaRon Bland
  • Jourdan Lewis (activated from PUP)
  • Noah Igbinoghene
  • Eric Scott Jr.
  • Nahshon Wright

Safety
  • Donovan Wilson
  • Jayron Kearse
  • Malik Hooker
  • Isarael Mukuamu
  • Juanyeh Thomas
It'll be 6 soon and last year the Cowboys got very thin at corner with their #2 and #3 going down so they're keeping extra depth.

I can tell you why. Last year, value, equity and the ability to move other positions on and off the roster without getting poached.

It really is that simple. We have the dline figured out. It's important to have the right players and depth. With our defensive scheme, and bend don't break approach, you need guys familiar with Quinn's scheme who Quinn trusts.

Also, Quinn is the type of guy who puts his money where his mouth is. If he says it, he has to show he means it or you lose the faith players put into you, which is what apparently happened to Malik Davis last year. We saw the result, or lack of, this year. I still think Shampklin was the better option from last year.

I'm happy they kept all of these guys on board. The defense is still the strength of this team. The integrity of their bond is important. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that's why.

Hell, I'm still confused about the Kelvin Joseph trade as I have no issue trading him but to get back a 1-year CB rental who was a 1st round bust? That made no sense but then again it's JJ.
Clearly the Cowboys knew something. Maybe he just wasn't a fit? Maybe he wasn't willing to put as much effort in as DQ wanted? Maybe he was mentally deficient for the position? Who knows? They wanted him gone and he's gone. I don't know why they traded for this new guy. Maybe DQ sees something everyone else doesn't.

Gotta keep/protect ur best players.

Can't just have a number etched in stone for each position...regardless of the individual players.

If you only have 3 RBs you like on ur team, but 7 corners u like (for example) why cut a CB you think can be a future starter just to save a spot for a 4th RB you don't even like and you know wont contribute?

Obviously there are limits to this.... but I'm sure you get where I'm coming from

I just looked around the NFC East.

Wash and NY seem pretty normal.... but as of right now Philly only has 4 WRs on their roster, 4 LBers, and ZERO Punter.

But like 15 offensive linemen and 7 corners

They...like us....are examples of keeping ur best guys from other teams, cutting the guys u don't like regardless of numbers at each position (knowing they'll likely still be available to resign in the future if needed), and knowing there's still almost 2 weeks left to tweak ur roster.

How much of a trade market was there for Kelvin Joseph? Not much.

This was two teams swapping guys they were going to cut otherwise.
