I read this article. My take on it? The writer is saying (paraphrasing) "As long as we do well during the regular season, who cares about post season." So much emptiness in that article.

I was having a discussion about the business of the NFL a few days ago, and something interesting was evident. Companies that look at fan analytics based on attendance, merchandise sales, social engagement, TV ratings, and search volume find that seven teams are consistently at or near the top is those categories collectively. Number one is our own Dallas Cowboys. The other teams are New England, Philly, Green Bay, San Francisco, Pittsburgh, Kansas City, with the NYG and Chicago just behind the pack depending on the year.

The sad part of this? Every team listed has at least been to the NFC or AFC Championship game this century, with most being in or winning a Super Bowl. The lone exception? The Dallas Cowboys. So, how are we the most popular team in the country despite not winning anything of significance since the 1990's? Are we truly riding the coattails of being called America's Team almost 50 years ago?

IMO Dallas became the top team due to being great at the right time. The 90's team had swagger, top talent and well were also a team that some watched to root against.
Their logo is iconic, they are located in a major triplex, and for a long time was the only team in Texas. Add in Jerry's business expertise, the Cowboys have always been relevant media wise even in down seasons.
Dallas has a huge draw in California as well.

Now in 20-30 years will they still be the top team after Jerry goes? Stephen likes the mic, but I don't think he has that same business/stay relevant even if infamous topics Jerry has.
Once the generation that watched the triplets fade out, will the aura for the team still be high if no success? Dunno. You still got Miami fans still talking about their perfect season 50+ years ago.

IMO Dallas has simply been branded like The Yankees, Maple Leafs, Lakers etc of top teams that have a huge World fanbase that will stay fans as it's been generational.

I watch due to seeing Aikman, Smith and Irvin. Woody as well and for some reason always loved Hennings and Leon Lett.
Even though I wasn't born in Texas.

I only watch because of Jerry Jones. He is just so cool, and very witty. His jokes are higher level stuff.

I love hearing him talk, and it just makes me all pumped up for football.

I just feel fortunate that he chose to purchase the team I happened to root for already. It’s like a double bonus and as a fan, I’d feel greedy asking for an ounce more.

It's still the goodwill from the 70s-90s championship runs. So many greats through those years wore the uniform. Some classic NFL moments. Since Dallas is a large market that will continue a bit but it is fading. The Cowboys are more of a punchline now.

This. And after close to 30 years of holding the fort I started losing interested after the '22 season. Basically stopped watching games live last season. Won't be back this season either. Once Dak's gone I'll probably spend some time watching the Cowboys again. A fresh (true rebuild) start could regain my interest.

Reading the forums satisfies my Cowboys fandom well enough these days.

I can only speak for myself.
I watch because of loyalty to what they used to be.
Not the poorly run, cash cow they have become.

I can see how it could be considered empty in that it did nothing to provide hard core fans any real relief. The writer I believe accurately answered the question asked by the OP "Why do people watch the Cowboy's" people in this case is likely not us hard core fans, we watch because of the love hate we have for team and some of us will watch them as long as the good lord gives us the strength to do so. As far as the OP's last question in their post, the answer is yes, had it not been for the rock-solid foundation this organization set early on with owners, coaches and players and in the case of the question, I would say from the early Cowboy's up to the mid 90's Cowboys, some fans" are riding coat tails. IMO
