Why do we have to set up battle lines before the draft?

I read all these threads about us taking so-and-so vs. so-and-so and I see people getting riled up about the mere thought of drafting a certain player, and I just don't get it. Why does everyone have to have their little list of favorites before these players have even stepped on our practice field?

Now if Jerry reaches for a player that everyone agrees was taken a round or three too early like he used to do, or if he trades several picks for one pet player, I can understand being upset. But if we take a Bowe over a Meachem, for instance, as long as the player is taken in the general area he's projected to go, why get angry? I like the draft as much as anyone and I have my favorites like everyone else, but the truth is that we don't know how any of these players will turn out, and just because the team disagrees with our personal favorites doesn't mean the player can't help our team win.

I guess I just hate to see people lining up to bash certain players before we've even put them on the field one time. And for some reason, it seems to get worse every year. Why do it? Is it really that fun to bash a rookie every time he doesn't set the world on fire just because he wasn't the highest on your personal draft board?

Is anyone else with me?

OTOH, I have enjoyed several discussions viewing trends that can be pointed to as a factor in successful translation to the NFL. There are several guys on here that have spent alot of time looking over these guys, just for fun, and they've come up with some pretty sweet research. You get the good and the bad, I suppose.

Think about it this way -if we didn't draw the battle lines before the draft, we'd never get any "Lawson notched two sacks" threads, "We should've drafted a roided up seizure=patient" threads....then, we wouldn't be able to follow them up in the offseason with "I TOLD you we should've addressed the personal trainer position in the offseason" threads, where our resident Messiah's can crucify themselves because noone listened to them (boo-frickety-hoo), or didn't do what THEY thought we should have.

You don't want to live in a world like that, CL. That's not the innernets I know and love.

It was last year's "Lawson vs. Carpenter" debates with ogt where I clearly overwhelmed his meager draft knowledge to the point where he now considers me his better.

I agree. I think Dallas has many different options out there to choose from and no one position that is in critcal need. As long as the Cowboys are not reaching for players I think we will be fine.

I have read 3 different guides cover to cover and listen to every draft analyst on the radio I can, and I have no idea what this team should do at 22.

I don't even watch that much college football, so no way could I pick a player.

I do like the well thought out posts from guys explaining why they want a particular player.

I think Ted Ginn is one of the options for the Cowboys but not the only options. Myself I don't think he would be a bad pick.

Tired of Ware/Merriman debates. We will get our answer anyway with Phillips running his 34 but this time Ware gets to play in it and not the steriod using Merriman.

I think getting excited about the upcoming draft is part of being a Cowboys' fan. But I do think some posters fall in love with a certain player and get upset if we don't take him. On the other hand most of us are worried that Jones will fall in love with a player and do something stupid. It's hard to forget what he's done in the past (except for Parcells years) and accept his statement that he's learned his lessons. Jerry loves to wheel and deal and that isn't always the best way to work the draft.

I guess many here, me included, at times want to flex their football intelligence quotient. So in at least that respect, we are like Jerra, who wants to be known as a football guy, a football expert.
The difference is, Jerra has the ability to make those picks real, and that makes him dangerous. Great motivator, great pro-active owner, great in the enthusiasm department and willing to put his money where his mouth is. But no great shakes as a talent evaluator.

Jerry made the picks when Parcells was here as well, difference is Jerry listened to the input from guys like Parcells and Ireland and I expect that to continue to be the case with Phillips and Ireland giving their opinions on players. BP said it many times that all personnel moves is the combined effort with him and Jones.
