Why do you like the Star? Why do you like the Cowboys?
What is it exactly about the Cowboys that you like?
For me, it was really about two people. My Dad and Tom Landry. It was just great to come home from church on Sundays in Dallas, and spend that time cheering and hollering around the TV. Building traditions with your Dad is just something you can't replace.
Tom Landry was a shining example of character, and a strong Christian, which made him all the more likeable. Leading a team with national attention and always seeming to be the underdog, it was great to watch those teams. There were bad apples on the Cowboys in those years, but the leader of the team was above reproach. His leadership was unparallelled in the league. And that's why the Cowboys were not just the local team, but the good guys.
You couldn't help but love the Cowboys in those days. That's what the Dallas Cowboys star symbolizes to me. That's why I thought the Cowboys were special. And they were.
While some of those special qualities have diminished over the years, through various changes and just becoming less naive about the real reason players play, it just helps to remember what really matters about the game, the principles of teamwork and joy of watching real drama unfold. Competition, respect for players, coaches, and team is what it's all about. Getting a win is big, but leaving the fundamentals of the sport behind can tarnish a win.
Before I go any further, I want to know. What do you like about the Cowboys, what do you want your children to like about the Cowboys? Why do you like the Star?
