Why does Witten get a pass?

T.O accused Romo and Witt of making secret plays I believe...

Responses like this make me chuckle so uncontrollably inside.

Like what has he done to still be such a fan favorite? He prob makes the most mental mistakes on the team in crucial moments. Yeah, hes tough blah blah blah. But from the celebration penalties, false starts, holding, pass int. Why does he get a pass though? Esp for him being a captain you would think that he would be held to a higher standard.

And here's my take on all of it. I don't think anyone actually gets a pass for what they're not doing well. Every single player on the team, in the league, has stuff they need to do better and need to improve upon. Everyone knows this.

Does Witten need to clean up the mistakes? Absolutely. Do we need to point that out for people to know that he has things to work on as well? Nope.

The tons of penalties on the O-Line and the piss poor defense and terrible turnovers by this team are much more glaring.

Witten isn't athletic like other tight ends. What sets him apart is his ability to find the opening against defenses and taking advantage of them, better than almost any tight end in the league.

I've always loved Witten but this year he hasn 't played worth a crap. Isn't he now respnnsible for three turnovers this year? Seems like our best players have caused the most problems in general.

This is one of many posts calling out jason Witten this year. Doesn't sound like he is getting a pass to me.

When your 1-5 there are not too many players on the team playing up to their potential. I'm all for calling out the 53rd player on the roster, to the coaches, to the scouts, and ultimately Jerry.

This season is a disaster.

I think you need to go back and read Adams post. It might enlighten some of his play.

I'm with him. Witten has been one of my favorite players for several years now, but I agree with everything above.

If you believe all those things to be true, then obviously he hasn't been one of your favorite players.....

Well, that's like having Austin score a td, then creating a penalty that puts us back in the same position ultimately as we were before the TD. I'm not saying everything he does he sucks at but it seems to me that for every foot taken forward by Witten he's caused a foot taken back. I do have more confidence that he can come around though than some of the others that's for sure.

Witten has not had one of his best seasons. A good thing about his game is he always seemed to be open for huge gains, which made up for getting tackled the millisecond he catches it. Now, it just seems hes getting more penalties than getting open. He does not get a pass from me at all.

Well said, again...

Really?

Well, let's see. He was on a pace for 85 catchs, 1,000 yards, and 4-5 touchdowns this year. His yearly averages over the course of his career are 74 catches, 852 yards, and 3.8 TDs (not counting this year).

If he's less elusive, slower, and generally not as good of a player as he used to be, how is it that he's having one of his most productive seasons?

Really?

Player - catches/yards/TDs - (So far this season)

Dallas Clark - 37/347/3
Chris Cooley - 35/392/2
Antonio Gates - 35/540/8
Zach Miller - 33/453/4
Vernon Davis - 32/422/4
Tony Gonzalez - 29/292/4
Jason Witten - 32/365/2

Now, these are their numbers per game. All players have played 7 games except for Clark and Witten.

Dallas Clark - 6.1/57.8/.5
Chris Cooley - 5/56/.28
Antonio Gates - 5/77.1/1.1
Zach Miller - 4.7/64.7/.57
Vernon Davis - 4.5/60.2/.57
Tony Gonzalez - 4.1/41.7/.57
Jason Witten - 5.3/60.8/.33

Witten has the 2nd most catches per game of TEs on this list behind Clark. He's number 3 in yards per game behind Gates and Miller. And he's 5th out of 7 for touchdowns. Okay, top 3 is debatable, but he's certainly in the discussion. The thing is, his production is so close to all the other tight ends on this list that if he's slowing down and losing a step, so are all the others.

No, it hasn't.

He's taking heat for his penalties, and rightly so, but people can't stop there. If he's committing that many penalties, then OBVIOUSLY he MUST be having a bad year statistically too.

This is without a doubt the worst post of this entire discussion. Dodger, how dare you bring stone cold factual data to back your claims. The act of using facts is completely absurd. I am disappointed that you have chosen not to use a high level of ignorance, stupidity, and falsities. Don't you understand that these 3 concepts rule the day......:bang2:

btw....great post

Stats

The stats are telling me Terrell Owens is a top 5 receiver and better than Miles Austin this year.

http://espn.go.com/nfl/statistics/player/_/stat/receiving/sort/receivingYards/year/2010/seasontype/2

I don't want to trade Austin for TO though.

stats are facts but they don't always tell the whole story and aren't predictive in a vacuum (if you want a stat tutorial and regression modeling lesson, I'll be happy to give one again).

Fans think their players are always more talented then others, primarily because they don't watch other players that often.

That said, Witten is good and has a great attitude and that goes a long way. however, i suspect anyone who wanted to build an offense would take Vernon Davis, Gates and Clarke before Witten all day - but very few would turn Witten down if he were available.

Others have much more athletic ability which may work for some schemes better than others. I bet if you put Witten in SF, his numbers would be half of what they are now thanks to Alex Smith.

i don't know why people are offended to the point of sarcasm about that. He is a very good player - but his penalties are way too much

Why are Witten's penalties this season "way too much," but Vernon Davis' penalties are not?

You claim that other fans "don't watch other players that often," but do you have any idea how many times Davis has been penalized this season? Heck, do you even have any idea how many times Witten has been penalized this season?

How about last season? Any idea how many times Davis was penalized last season? How about Witten?

How about dropped passes? Any idea how many passes Davis dropped last season, compared to Witten? Any idea how many passes Gates and Clark dropped last year or so far this year, compared to Witten? I mean, because you watch those other players so much.

Anytime someone says, "blah blah blah" in any context I've noticed they don't have any substantive content to provide. They actually teach it in advanced linguistics courses, too, so I'm not pulling this out of my arse.

I think only people on this Forum think Witten is living up to his out of this world HYPE!

The guy is a fan favorite so i know it's hard to accept it. But the reality is He's just a solid player that got inflated stats and hype.
