Get rid of this bye week and just add a 17th game? I know the records would increase slighty but I think the fans will win in this scenario. My plan would be for one week to be called rivalry week and everybody would play your rival in a given week every season. For ex

WeeK 8 for instance

Dalvs Was
Philly vs NYG
Rsvens-Browns
Jags=Panthers
Chi- GB or Det
Minn vs the other
Oak-Den
KC-Sd
Mia-NYJ
Pitt-Cincy
49ers-Rams[remember same ol sorry azz Rams comments]
NE-Indy

Plus, your have to throw a few teams together but what do you think

why don't they shorten the pre-season from 4 weeks to 2 weeks and make the regular season from 16 games to 18 games???

Because then the owners have to pay 2 more games of regular season salary. They sell the same number of tickets for a pre season game but they can pay the player Training Camp pay or per diem. They are easily the most profitable games of the year for the owners.

The NFL regular and postseason are too long already. Crikey! The Super Bowl has been pushed into February, for Pete's sake. If they start adding more games to the schedule, it'll probably make them feel justified about inserting another BYE week, too. Next thing you know, the NFL will be competing with the start of March Madness.

Stop the madness.

Shorten preseason to two-three weeks max.

Start the regular season in the last week of August or as close to September 1st as possible.

Cut out the bye week.

Drag the Super Bowl, the year's BIGGEST one-day sporting event, BACK into the month of January where it belongs.

AAAAAAGGGGGGGHHHHHH!!! :banghead:

Who cares why they dont, they just wont. THe beating players take in a season is too much, for a couple extra games. not to mention the playoffs. They get paid too much money, but they take a hellcious beating over the course of a season, and i for one am not for extending, the beating these guys have to take. THey need time with their familes. Even if you crazy fans dont. :D

I don't mind the bye week however I think it is pretty silly to have them over the 1st 3 weeks of the season. As for making the reg season longer? guys can barely make 16 games regular season game. I think the physical nature of the game makes adding more games unrealistic

Parcells put a good perspective on it saying that it's a ctually 8 weeks in for the teams when you factor in Camp, etc. So while an early week 3 bye may suck for us, it's not all THAT early for the teams.. Though that leaves them with 14 weeks of pain ahead without a respite really.

I understand where Bill is coming from but in my own opinion I think having the bye this early in the season is not a great ideal. I'd much rather see the 1st rd of bye taking place after the 3rd week of the season. As Charlie Waters ask in his artical: The premise of giving each team a bye week once a year as a respite is a good thing for the weary warriors. But doesn't it lose its sense of purpose when it occurs two weeks into the campaign?
I feel the same as he does on this issue.

They would pay the same amount of salary, just spread out over two more games.

The players themselves may demand more money for playing two more games, but that's BS. Players are more likely to be injured going half-arsed in preseason than they would during the reg season, so they have nothing to complain about.

Players get their percentage of the cap regardless of the source of income, the CBA covers them.

One thing to consider is the extreme early season heat in the South, but I think it adds nice symmetry to the late season cold in the North.

If you don't think salaries would take a jump with 2 added games then you don't remember the switch from 14 to 16 games.

The bye week is good for teams. As for the Superbowl, why wouldn't the NFL want to creep into the sports-dead month of February? You realize that's a network ratings sweeps month, right?

We are only in week 3 and injuries are already mounting through out the league. No way we go to 17 or 18 regular season game. players are not going to go for it and I doubt the owners would do it.

I have no problems with a bye week except when the are early in the season. However I think all teams should have the same bye week.

How about a compromise. AFC bye one week and the NFC bye the next.
