Why DT?

Because you just named a bunch of journeymen. TCraw has injury history and Thornton was a solid signing but he's not a Pro Bowler wreaking havoc on opposing offenses.
If we can improve at the DT position it would certainly help.

In the 1st? Where would he start; over Crawford (just restructured) or new FA in Thornton? I know you can't have enough DL, but that should be looked at past the first few rounds unless a real gem drops, etc.

The only explanation I can think of for neglecting DT completely last year was they knew this year's draft was gonna be loaded. Absolutely must come out with a quality DT this year. I think 3rd round is the value sweet spot because the depth should mean not too large of a talent drop from 2nd to 3rd but using the 2nd is fine too.

I would go S in Rd 2 with Joseph but hear your point too. If they go DT @ 34, KJ Dillon would be a good S prospect in the 3rd if he's still there.

After the Thornton signing, I'd be shocked if they took a DT in the draft before the 4th round.

No one said draft a DT in the first, but I'm not opposed to grabbing one in the 2nd or 3rd if we have him rated that high.

Why wait til after "the first few rounds"? So we can get more of what we already have? We're trying to build a dominant DLine not a just good enough DLine. If you want talent you have to be ready to invest early picks there.

No you got a good point there. My admitted bias for Joseph made me overlook the importance of a DT either @ 3/1 as long as they can assist in collapsing the pocket which is definitely pivotal in establishing a strong DL. Good point.
