They can designate him a June 1st cut. This gets his base salary off the books now; however, all of his remaining prorated bonus money accelerates into the cap now. After June 1st, they can move 1/2 of the accelerated bonus money to 2014.

Current Cap Hit 11.175M
Base Salary -7M
Accelerated Bonus Money +8.35M

Savings on 2013 cap:
Now: 2.825M
After June 1st: 7M

I am hoping that they are keeping him around to keep other teams from figuring out how high tackle is on our priorities list in the upcoming draft. That makes the most sense to me. I don't think it should be a very effective smoke screen, since everyone who has watched the Cowboys generally knows Free isn't any good. Then again, maybe Jerry is playing the "the Cowboys are so clueless they might actually keep Free around card", which might actually work as a smoke screen. :) The worse case scenario is that the Cowboys aren't trying to fool anyone and actually think he will start again at right tackle, or that he can be moved inside and play guard.

How does Free compare to Erik Williams?

The only comparison between the two is they both played for the Cowboys. Williams was a monster....

Hope that is the case that we are just stringing things along looking hard for alternatives while not saying a lot.

Cut the bum for a June 1 Cap saving

This reminds me of Kosier. Some were saying he was ok while the vast majority cried out for help.

Free is not that bad all the time but enough to be a problem. I'm thinking he will have to restructure or just outright cut but don't be surprised if he's brought back. And he's not going to be cut until at least after the draft. They have got to know what they have at tackle first.

Kosier was a lot better at his job than Free has been most of the last two seasons. Kosier always was a guy who could be overpowered, but he was mobile, and smart, and underrated.

Free started out that way, but as soon as it was exposed that he can't counter the hard move inside, his game was compromised. Now, he's susceptible to both that and, with a strong enough opponent, the straight bull rush. I think he needs to be replaced if the cap can accommodate it at all. Maybe we wait to see if one of the value players we're targeting actually comes available. It wouldn't do to cut him and not have a veteran replacement ready, but it's not like the situation with Kosier where people just wanted the guy replaced because he was a journeyman low-round pick and they thought we should get in a guy with a better pedigree.

Probably because they don't think the amount they can save on immediately cap space is worth the value he provides if he turns it around next year. They also probably want to wait and see how the draft plays out to see if they're in any position to cut an offensive tackle. You need 3 offensive tackles in the NFL.

We almost have 1.
