Why has it been so hard for Dallas to get a decent safety

It's a head scratcher for sure. Most of the winning Super Bowl teams that I can think of since 95, all had a better than average safety tandem on their team, while receiving the Lombardi.

no question our ability to evaluate safeties or continue to undervalue them is puzzling. We've had more safeties trot through here since Roy and Woody. It's been like a stampede of safeties, a bevvy of safeties, a plethora of safeties. We're drunk on safeties. Bad safeties are like bad whiskey too!! Rot gut!!

I like Xavier Woods a lot. But to answer the question, I think being burned by Roy Williams (Safety) and Ken Hamlin's contract, the team doesn't value the position as much in my opinion.

Now a safety has to be a great cover safety to get a big contract. Game has changed a lot and the old in the box safety is not valued as high as it once was, back in the day.

You have to go cheap somewhere and Dallas decided safety was it for them. Serviceable has been good enough for them. They have attempted to sign guys but have never pulled the trigger on the big deal.

Landon Collins was available when workout warrior Byron Jones was drafted. I usually don't rue draft picks cause its so hit and miss, but that one still hurts to me.

Thing is, a lot of people considered Collins to be a SS. I did. The Cowboys may have too. And I think with the Byron pick they were looking for a pure FS.

To be fair Roy Williams game went to hell after Woodson retired. The only thing of note he did after Woodson was gone was inventing the horse collar tackle.

We have undervalued key areas of the defense. No priority placed on having stout interior line men on the defense. We undervalue them in terms of how they can help our defensive ends and we undervalue them in terms of how they can help our line backers, particularly Sean Lee.

Frankly the problem is that we are simply trying to fit our outdated systems of team building into a the modern day NFL. It doesn't work. The 90's were great and Jimmy's teams were great. But realistically speaking, how could one build a team like that today? Fact is that you simply cannot, there are too many positions of need and no way to have top flight talent at every position.

Dallas has had decent safeties aplenty.
See Barry Church who walked into a starting gig on a top 5 defense.

But Woody was a Hall of Fame caliber player and we haven't had that since.
People expecting Woody are why the play seems so poor.

Reality is it's mostly been average.

Church was a average safety. He walked into the perfect situation. He has Gipson playing FS and Bouye and Ramsey as his corners. Ramsey is the best CB in the game. They also have an extremely effective pass rush.

Kid flashed last season. And his college tape was pretty good. Has a nose for the ball that's for sure.

In his rookie year after missing time with injury. Also had his first INT in his first like 3 games. How many did our entire backfield have the year before? lol. I get your name but sheesh. Give the kid a break.
