Why has it been so hard for Dallas to get a decent safety

Kid flashed last season. And his college tape was pretty good. Has a nose for the ball that's for sure.

It's a head scratcher for sure. Most of the winning Super Bowl teams that I can think of since 95, all had a better than average safety tandem on their team, while receiving the Lombardi.

Church is worth mentioning. Not a star, but outstanding in run support and consistently made a lot of tackles. If we had come up with a strong FS to pair with him the safeties would have been very good.

He was a rookie last year, and looked pretty darn good when his playing time increased later in the season. He's not yet proven, but he definitely showed promise.

Dallas has had decent safeties aplenty.
See Barry Church who walked into a starting gig on a top 5 defense.

But Woody was a Hall of Fame caliber player and we haven't had that since.
People expecting Woody are why the play seems so poor.

Reality is it's mostly been average.

Byron Jones would be great if he wasn't allergic to hitting. His coverage is pretty good.

They would have to get one in the later rounds that would be a pleasant surprise because the only two men to target Safeties since 89 were Johnson and Parcells and you can draw your own conclusions about that.

Conversely, why does it seem so easy for Dallas to have better than decent OL? 3 1sts and Collins would have been as well.

Two positions that Dallas does not seem to place value on are DT and S. Interesting that the two best DT since 89 were also acquired by those two men, Maryland and Glover.

The bigger question to me is why in the hell would Dallas hire a T2 DC and not fill it out properly? The apparent answer is that the only two times the team gave a damn about defense was when those two men were here.

Woodson was a second-round pick who turned out to be first-round worthy (37th pick overall). Williams was a first-round pick. We have not drafted a pure safety that high since then, unless you count Byron Jones, who was considered a tweener. J.J. Wilcox is the closest as a third-round pick.

I do not think they thought of Jones as a S or he would not have been taken in the 1st.

Jimmy had scouted many of the same players to come to Miami and play in the exact same Miami 4-3 scheme.
He was an all-time great scout of defensive talent for that first few years after coming to Dallas.

I personally believe the foundation for having a really good championship caliber defense, is by having strength through the middle, thereby controlling the middle of the field at every level. DT, MLB and Safety.

Im with you on this one... It sucked harder because I knew he would be a flop simply because he jumped up draft boards simply because of his combine performance..

That is never a good thing when someone is a better player during the "underwear super bowl"

no question our ability to evaluate safeties or continue to undervalue them is puzzling. We've had more safeties trot through here since Roy and Woody. It's been like a stampede of safeties, a bevvy of safeties, a plethora of safeties. We're drunk on safeties. Bad safeties are like bad whiskey too!! Rot gut!!

We haven't had a safety make the Pro Bowl since 2007 and an All-Pro Team since 2003. That's scary...
