This year we make the final adjustments needed.
Might take a little step back, but overall a big leap forward for long term success.

Im' excited about the preseason. There is so much to watch. A RB competition with Dowdle, Davis, Vaughn and Luepke. The fight for WR 5 and 6. I mean you have Turpin, Fehoko, Brooks, and two or three others in the hunt. THe battle at TE....will Schoonmaker come on now that he is practicing? Ferguson has looked really good blocking and catching, Hendershot has flashed, and there is McKeon and Stephens, Jr. The OL battles...some of these guys have to start stepping up. That right there is enough to keep us interested in preseason, but we haven't even discussed the defense. The improvement of Sam Williams. New big body Mazi Smith. Developing some LBs in Cox, Clark, Overshown, and Jefferson. THe logjam at Safety, and the competition at CB. This team has a ton of talent, so guys are going to have to step up. Im looking forward to seeing the backups fighting for their NFL lives.
Excellent post! :clap::hammer:

You want to get your quick players in space. Plus, he's small, so you don't want to have him taking on dlinemen constantly. So, screens and toss plays to him are a great way to both get him outside and to protect him.
How is our QB do of us going to toss passes to a 5-foot chap over the hands of 6-foot players?

Let me ask you this, as I wasn't born yet. What were some of the concerns entering the 1992 season? I was born late that year.
A few here talking about how many SB's we would win entering the 1992 season. They being silly! The biggest concern was at the QB position. Troy showed a lot of promise with his leadership skills but would turn the ball over. In the 1991 season, Game #12, Troy got hurt. At that point in his career, he had thrown 31 TDs to 46 INTs. Not very good. Steve Beuerlein comes in and behind a young and hungry defense, Steve wins 4 in a row and takes them to the playoffs and even wins a Wild Card game against the Bears. The following game we got blown out by the Lions. Spirits were up no doubt. But don't let these silly knuckleheads try to tell you we were all thinking multiple SB wins entering the 1992 season. Entering the 1993 season? Hell yeah we were!

Back to the QB concerns. In 1989, with the SECOND overall pick, Jimmy drafted his former QB at Miami, Steve Walsh. Many believed Jimmy wasn't sold on Aikman because of his recklessness with the ball. Jimmy gambled and traded Steve Walsh for some draft picks and crossed his fingers with Aikman and brought in Steve Beuerlein as his backup. Other than his leadership and confidence in himself, not many predicted he would turn it around like he did. It reminds me of, in a way, Dak and Rush. Steve Walsh and Beuerlein, both were limited like the way Rush is. Dak has great leadership and has all the confidence you'd want in a franchise QB, like Troy had, but Dak just hasn't put it all together like Troy end up doing. To be fair to Dak, he doesn't have the "The Great Wall of Dallas" "The Playmaker" a Jay Novacek and an Emmitt Smith backing him up. Plus, a very smart coach who majored in psychology, Jimmy Johnson. IMO, Troy was the greatest bus driver the world has ever seen. And that's no knock on him either. I always pick him as the most underrated QB of all time.

That's my take on entering the 1992 season. What a great time to be a Cowboys fan!

That must have been quite a fun time entering the seas, and it seems we have a bit of fun, for slightly different reasons, entering this season with a lot of excitement.

I'm excited to see the defense. I think they're top 5 at least.
Still concerned about the run game. Pollard can't carry the run game alone. He needs help.
Let's see who can share the load with him.
I'm not worried about regular season Dak. I'm concerned about post-season Dak.
I'd be disappointed if we don't make it to the NFC Championship Game, especially with no top quarterbacks in the conference.

I think we can make the NFCC. We've been trending that way where we have gotten one step further each year with Mike (makes a nice difference from one playoff year and one crap year with Garrett when he wasn't going 8-8).

Do you know the physics of a screen?
Dam it. Now I am itching...

The goal of a screen pass is to quickly get the ball to a target behind the line to let him use his speed. It's basically an extended hand-off that counts as a pass. For Vaughn, it's the perfect type of play.

Norv Turner was brilliant. He looked at Troy's skills, our OL, and Emmitt, developed a scheme that was unstoppable, Timing routes were everywhere, the whole field was used and had to be defensed. Then you had Emmitt, and if you thought you had everything covered, he unleashed the MOOSE.
Kellen reminded me of Norv as he continued to morph our offense to fit Dak You'll witness true Kellen this year. Hell If Pollard wasn't injured we could have defeated SF even with our handicaps.

Dak has a solid o-line to play behind. I can see only good things happening.....

CORRECTIONS, GUYS: Going into 1992. Steve Walsh was a supplemental draft pick in 1989. Jimmy had him in Miami and he was more NFL ready than Aikman, but had a below average arm. Later, Jimmy said he drafted him to trade him away later for multiple picks, which he eventually did to New Orleans for a 1 and a 3 in 1991 and a number 2 in 1992.

Into 1992, there was no doubt, the pieces on offense were there, young uber-talents with a smart accurate QB in Aikman, a super WR in #88 who could always get open and was Mr. Clutch; a superior running game with Emmitt, the Moose, a shifty TE in Novacek, a deluxe 2nd receiver in Alvin Harper who was a 1991 1st round pick who made big plays for big yardage when opposing defenses concentrated too much on Emmitt and Irvin. Then, there was a mean and tough 2nd year OT ready to start and dominate, which he did, ERIK WILLIAMS.

Now to the defense that Jimmy vowed to improve: he drafted and started 1st round picks CB Kevin Smith after several weeks into the season, a speedy CB with 4.3 speed; MLB Robert Jones, the 2nd 1st rounder. With the 2nd pick in the second round, he drafted an Ariz St LB who ran a 4.37 and never missed a tackle and converted him into a strong safety, Darren Woodson, who became the Cowboys impact 3rd safety on the in 1992, boosting the secondary's effectiveness. Jimmy only gave Woodson to learn the 3rd safety's duties. He did not give him any starter plans/duties. Midway through the season, Jimmy said he regretted not giving starter plans duties to Darren, as he realized he was his best safety and super smart, did not blow any assignments, did not blow any tackles attempted and did not miss any tackles in the open field. All of this plus Charles Haley coming over as a starter. Jimmy had the greatest set of back-up DLmen in history that year: veteran DE Jim Jeffcoat, 1st year DL Air Force pilot Chad Hennings, who had led the nation in sacks his senior year, Jimmy Jones a Univ of Miami DT Jimmy loved who was great in short bursts, and an obscure DL and basketball player from Emporia State named Leon Lett, who later became All-Pro.

This 1992 defense was now stacked!! Solid run stuffing DT's, both high 1st rounders, Russell Maryland and Tony Casillas, the latter obtained in a trade; DE: 6'6" LDE Tony Tolbert and RDE Haley who was an impact payer, instant pressure on opposing QB's. OLB Ken Norton, Jr became a star that year. Boy was that team stacked and loaded. Never in NFL history would there be such a great talented team.

The Buffalo Bills ran into a juggernaut in the Super Bowl in Jan 1993 and were blown to smithereens!!! The greatest joy as a Cowboy fan ever, even better than Tom Landry's 1st Super Bowl win in Jan, 1972. Talent wise, the 92 team was their best in history.
