Why is Singletary not a viable HC candidate?

I see people advocating Norm Chow for a HC slot but saying Singletary 'isn't ready'. Huh? Norm just spent his first year in the NFL, correct? Why is he better suited to a head coaching job than Hall of Famer Singletary? I think Singletary at the very least would be a good motivator.

Thoughts?

I don't think Singletary has been a coordinator yet -- also he's only coached for a short period of time. 3 years I believe, all as an LB coach.

Chow on the other hand has been a coach for 32 years. Only 1 year in the NFL but a ton in college.

Ulitmately, I think Singletary is going to be a great HC but he just doesn't have much experience at this point.

I thought I read where Singleterry interviewed for the Falcons job the other day!

Maybe I'm wrong.

Personally, I think he needs more experience coaching, but considering Jack Del Rio jumped to the HC from the LB coaching spot, somebody might give him a shot. Tho his coaching reign has been a mixed bag.

With Singletary, the difference is that he was out of football for a long time before getting back into the NFL. Don't know if teams will hold that against him or not.

Only person I'm aware of that has interviewed for that job yet is Ken Whisenhunt.

I think he has that job locked up. He grew up in Georgia. Played college ball in Georgia and played professionally with the Falcons. All of his family is there. It makes too much sense.

The guy had the interview set up just days after Mora was fired. Plus he seems to be an overall attractive candidate.

No, I believe he was DC of Ravens for a year before he became a HC.

Falcons Interview Coaching Candidates
Several candidates for the Atlanta Falcons coaching position are expected to make their way thru Atlanta over the next few days.

Pittsburgh Steeler assistant coach Ken Whisenhunt met with team officials Thursday, while the team expects to interview Ron Rivera from the Chicago Bears and Mike Singletary from the San Franciscio 49ers over the weekend.

The Bengals have released a statement saying that Marvin Lewis is not a candidate for Pittsburgh's head coaching vacancy.

There was some thought that Lewis, who has a history in the Steelers' organization, might be interested in the job, but ESPN and a Bengals spokesperson have said nothing will come of it.

ESPN's John Clayton added Mike Singletary and Giants defensive coordinator Tim Lewis to the list of candidates for the position in Pittsburgh. Jan. 6 - 11:01 am et

He was never the DC...only the LB coach.

Like I said, to date the only person that's interviewed there is Whisenhunt, unless he interviewed there this morning and I missed it. I know they're planning on interviewing Mike and several others, but haven't yet.

Nope thats not true. He was DC of Panthers, so I was wrong about him being DC for Ravens, before Del Rio became a HC.

I was referring to the Ravens.

Great player doesn't equal great coach. Singletary is way to raw for me. Maybe in a few years.

They are both legit candidates, but it still depends on how they impress in an interview....do they have knowledge of the team? do they have knowledge of the division and the NFL? do they have an overview of what they want to do with the current personel and a plan for putting together the team they think can win a title, a plan that doesn't require more than a couple of years? how will they get the most out of the players? what offense will they run and who will run it? same for the defense?

You don't just get a head coaching job in the NFL because of your name...even Parcells had to interview with JJ and make a positive impression...an owner can't afford to have his team embarrassed like Snyder did by hiring Spurrier because he had a big name in college.

He was an overachiever and a leader for one of the all-time best defenses as a player. I would love to see him coach here if Parcells leaves.

Mike will get a shot someday, maybe as soon as next year. Just don't know if he's quite ready.
