Why isn't Julius back returning punts?

Well, the way I look at it, a 5 yard pass to a RB is the same as a run. When we had difficulties against the Eagles, Saints, et.c we should have been passing it to the RBs.

I commented last year that there were tons of times both Jones and Barber were wide open for 8-10 gauranteed yards but Romo would throw it into double-coverage on TO for an incompletion. Now that I look back on it, I think it was probably more on the play-calling than Romo.

I fully expect us to pass it to the RBs until they stop it....

I agree, and in JJ's case it's even better because the guys who would be hitting him are smaller (than linemen) and there are fewer of them.

Last year in the regular season, JJ only had one game in which he caught more than 1 pass. At home against the Colts. Looking at his stat line, I wish we'd have thrown it to him 10 times.

22 carries 79 yards 3.6 avg.
3 receptions 25 yards 8.3 avg.

As for the difference between catching a pass and fielding a punt, there must be one. As a sophomore at Minnesota, Barber led the Big Ten in punt return average, but he also dropped four balls!

What, exactly, is so "hard to believe" about this particular thread?

for one he's never done it...also, how many other etams do you trotting out starting RB's to return punts?

ever see Payton, Campbell or Emmitt returning punts? what about Barry Sanders? hell what about guys like his brother Thomas Jones or everyone's hero Steven Jackson?

In college Julius returned 38 punts for a 11.2-yard average and 1 touchdown.

Crayton returned 72 punts for a 20.8-yard average and 10 touchdowns.

I didn't find any stats right off the bat, but Barber led the big-10 in punt return average (14.5).

Returning punts is not the same as rushing or catching the ball, otherwise we'd see LaDanian returning punts too. Why start out at the 20 and march it down the field with LaDanian when he can just return it the whole way.....

which was my point that people took offence to...you just dont see starting RB's or usually even starting WR's or CB's returning punts anymore...their other jobs are a huge priority over punt returning

those numbers on Crayton frankly cannot be true- since he certainly has shown NOTHING like that as a pro.

Well anyays on to the topic on hand. JJ should not return punts because he has yet to prove he has reliable hands.

So he has shown that he has unreliable hands? Why are we throwing to Owens, cause he like leads the league in drops....

But Crayton is ok back there because he carries the ball like a loaf of bread..

He did it well in college. No reason not to try him here.

Try reading the rest of the thread first...it makes it easier to keep up with the conversation.

He has done it. He did it very well at Notre Dame.

...as far as not seeing other starting running backs, there is some truth to that. However, many other teams have been more successful in finding a specialist in other areas.

I just want to see the second best guy get the job. ;)

First of all, Julius Jones was returning punts against top 25 teams. Crayton? well lets see...he returned punts against the likes of:

Southwestern Oklahoma State University
New Mexico Highlands University
Southwestern College
Sterling college
Oklahoma Panhandle State University
Langston University
Peru State College
Bacone College
Texas College
Southern Nazarene

See a difference? I do.

...and lets not start comparing LT and JJ. Do we even know if LT returned in college?

His very limited perception is my guess.

I agree. It can't hurt to try him.

I just want to see someone other than Crayton get a shot...he does nothing for me back there.

JJ isn't returing punts because he is the starting RB.

Newman returns punts because he is the fastest guy on the team. and even with that, he only returns in certain situations. Most of the time, its crayton getting the punts.

Teams do not ship there starter out there to return punts.

Hes not returning Punts because Parcells didn't program that into his little Robot body.

Maybe if we can get Parcells to update the firmware we could see him back there.

Reggie Bush may not be a "starter," but gets as many touches on offense as Julius does. Bush returned 28 punts last year, and returned one last Thursday in Indy.

Whether Wade's philosophy is the same as Sean Payton's is another matter. But the idea of Julius returning punts, at least part of the time, is not a ridiculous one.

Unless he was very, very good at it though, I'd rather not see him doing it.
