Why isn't Julius back returning punts?

Julius returning punts would be the best of both worlds. It gives an extra threat on special teams for the Cowboys and it allows Julius to showcase his skills for a contract next year, whether it's with Dallas or not. He returned kickoffs and punts at Notre Dame so why wouldn't we take advantage of that? "Juice" is most dangerous when he's in open space. I really don't understand why he isn't tried at punt returner. Thoughts?

The excuse can't be because he is a "starter".

Crayton is a starter now. So was Newman, one infinitely more valuable to our team.

I wonder if it is a case that we've never asked. Or if we did, he refused.

That's a very interesting question.

Exactly. Julius has said in the past he has great hands so fielding the ball wouldn't be a problem. This guy is explosive when he gets in the open field. Why not take advantage of his abilities?

I would think it has more to do with being the "starting rb" and the reason Crayton is doing it as a "starter" is that he wasn't planned to be the "starter", but is the most experienced punt returner on the team.

But Newman was a bona fide starter and he was returning punts....

Newman only returned in certain situations, they didn't want to expose him much, thats why Crayton got the bulk even though he wasn't very productive. Its also why they drafted Skyler Green in the fourth and some of the reason why they drafted Stanback in the fourth.

True, but Newman's ability at returning punts is likely on a much higher level than Jones'. I remember his punt returns at ND, and while his was very good at it, he doesn't have near the elusive or explosive qualities that Newman does.

However, I wouldn't mind seeing Jones try it...if he's still got it, he'd be an upgrade over Crayton for sure. Newman, despite his greater ability, shouldn't even be on the field during punt returns. He's far to valuable...and far more difficult to replace if injured.

Too much pounding....

20 carries a game x 16 games = 320 carries

6 pr a game X 16 games = 96 more carries

His career would probably be shorter.

Stanback isn't very good at returning punts.

David

Why don't you drop the condescending attitude and share (what is clearly) your superior knowledge of the subject rather than  ?

What, exactly, is so "hard to believe" about this particular thread?

I agree!! Julius can't catch. Bottomline.

I don't think he's much of a receiver, but to say he can't catch a punt when he owns the records for doing so at Notre Dame is a bit much...dontcha think?

It can't hurt to take a look at the very least.

When Newman was returning punts, he could then sit on the bench and rest. When Crayton was returning punts, he might play if we go 3 wide, but otherwise sit on the bench and rest. I am trying to think of one OFFENSIVE STARTER that also returned punts FULLTIME.

Good question.

It's not Julius, it's the guy calling the plays. Last season with Sparano as OC we threw fewer passes to backs than any other team in the league. Julius caught 35 passes the year before (with Payton), and will probably catch even more this year.

With Glenn out, both backs may see their fair share just to keep defenses honest.

Looking at what we did in preseason, and going by what Wade has said, we were planning to involve JJ more in the passing game anyway. But it's true that Glenn's absence will only boost everyone else's numbers.
