Why lack of Cowboy fans in Cowboys media?

Having a busy schedule when I tune in for podcast I am looking for cowboys talk only. I have noticed they have difficulty keeping conversation about cowboys. Currently living in philly area, their sport shows are razor focused on eagles, eagles, eagles. Very little banter.

A main reason cowboys shows seem so muddled is that most of media members might not even cowboy fans but rather are just opportunistic media hounds who found Dallas to be a spotlight media outlet. This would explain why they want to talk about other things because they don't see things like you and me.

Lets take look at their lineup:

1. Mickey Spagnola - seems like he has been in Dallas forever but was originally and maybe still a Green Bay packer fan. At times he seems more interested in talking about weather than Cowboys. He is guilty for good amount of banter on that show. Luckily with addition of Nate Newton he quickly gets the group to talking Cowboys football.

2. David Helman - from New Orleans. Admits he is not even cowboys fan but just an objective reporter. Obviously prefers college football (LSU) over NFL. Again, the cowboys can't find local guys who actually like the team while still being objective? Is this that hard to find?

3. Kelsey Charles - from midwest. Has little synergy with other members as a host. Gets very little reaction from fans on twitter. Has very little insight about players and clearly not a fan.

4. Bryan Broaddus - he has SB ring with Packers as scout. He even ran Eagles draft in 1998. I am big fan of his work ethic reviewing film and giving us the X & O's. Been in Dallas while but I couldn't tell you if he actually likes Cowboys. I suspect he is fan by now.

5. Nate Newton - SB ring with Cowboys. Like Broaddus gives us pure football talk. A Welcomed addition this year. Lives and breathes Cowboys. Finally.

6. Taylor Stern - she is new this year and improving. But she barely knew the players names few weeks ago. Your telling me there isn't one young female in Dallas/Fort Worth area who follows the cowboys and is also multimedia journalist?

7. Rob Phillips - He might be local guy. Went to college in Texas and then started working for Cowboys. We don’t get much from him on his background.

8. Nick Eatman - I believe he is Texas guy who actually likes the team.

There has to be a Lana Berry version for Cowboys out there to hire and replace this awkward mess posted above.

I think Mickey was a Bears fan, as he is from Chicago IIRC.
He has been covering the Cowboys for a very long time. I remember reading his articles back in the mid 80's if not before then. The football magazines that would come out in June or July, always had a local media guy cover the team in a write up. He did for the Dallas Morning News at he time. I think it DMN.
Then moved on to write for Dallas Cowboys Weekly.

Which I believe Suzy Kolber did also, or helped produce a Cowboys weekly tv show. Or both. And at one time was a Cowboys fan. Not sure if she still is.
I remember her doing the Sunday Night FOX sports in West Palm Beach after they won SB 27. She was extremely excited.
Next thing one knew she was off working on ESPN 2 when it first started up.

Almost all of the guys on The Fan 105.3 are big Cowboys fans. Their lead drive time guys grew up in the Dallas area. I think most of the other guys did also.

I would not consider any of the clowns in the Cowboys media dept. to be true media guys. Broaddus literally can bare spell his own name. He has to get help to write a blog article.

That listing of the people that work in the Cowboys media dept. reminds me of the time that Thomas "Hollywood" Henderson said this about Terry Bradshaw:

"He couldn't spell cat if you spotted him the C and the A".

Broaddus is a fan from way back and tells stories about seeing games as a nipper. Derek is an old Oilers fan I believe.

But you are right op it is a little odd, Steve Dennis felt like he had contempt for Dallas at times. The two girls are strange additions to the show as they seem to have limited knowledge but maybe that helps more casual fans access the programme. I would love to see them add another ex player for insight as media members can get on hype trains a little too easy.

The morning show guys aren't. Shan is a Commanders fan and RJ is a Jets fan.

Kevin Turner, or "KT" is a Packers fan, but he's not really in your face about it.

But for the most part, I think everyone else is except for maybe Dawson. But he doesn't seem partial to any team so that's cool.

Sydney Durso made the video feed of Talkin' Cowboys worth watching last season. With her gone I just listen to that show but Nate is a welcome addition.

They talk about a lot of other things because they cover all sports in the Dallas area. The main guys start at 3:00pm and are extreme Cowboys homers. If you listen when they first come on they'll tell at what time in the show they are going to focus on Cowboys talk.

The guys from 11 to 3 are also big Cowboys fans although 1 guy in that crew is from out of state. A couple of those guys actually watching film. As the Cowboys flagship station they have access to watch the actual game film at Valley Ranch. They often watch with Broaddus but, IMO, they'll already surpassed him in terms of good observations from the game film.

They even have an evening show that is OK; although, those guys are not as knowledgeable.

Yes, I should have mentioned that the morning guys are clowns and I won't listen to them. The G-Bag guys come on at about 11 and that's when I normally start listening.

Haven't listened to talking cowboys in a LONG time. It should have been called story time with Mickey because he usually spent a segment talking about his vacations and things that had nothing to do with football or the Cowboys. The last time I listened to the show Mickey spent over 5 minutes talking about some damn alarm clock he bought while he was traveling that didn't work. After almost putting me to sleep with that they spent another 10 minutes with Sunny talking about how she spent her weekend. That was the final straw I clicked it off and never listened to it again.

and thats my point...what is the deal with media in Dallas? I had opportunity to travel country with my previous job and most of sports shows were guys who actually liked the team they were covering. Dallas media has to have largest collection of non-cowboy fans in entire country with no one a close second. I would go one step further....there are people on this board I would rather listen to on podcast than media hired by cowboys. Which gives me an idea. Why not have weekly podcast from few members of this message board.

I'm not sure how these shows were before, but I listen to both Talkin Cowboys and Cowboys Break most days in the car via their app and I love it. With that Steve guy gone from last year (never agreed with a single opinion of his, just seemed clueless), both shows have guys who's opinions I like, and the two girls don't detract, they're pretty good considering they're relatively fresh to the team.

Broaddus, Eatman, Nate, Mikey, Derek and Rob are all great imo. And I never got a sense that they didn't love the team, no matter who they supported in their youth.

And I'll never understand the Broaddus hate. He never said he was a great writer, he admits he's awful and relies on the staff to edit his work , but writing isn't why he was brought on. It was his scout background, and I love it, personally. It's a point of view you rarely find in media. Having Nate as former player is just a great

Better correct myself before someone else does it's "Talkin' Cowboys" not "Talking Cowboys." :)

The media isn't supposed to be fans,or at least not show it.It's easier to do their job that way!

I don't agree at all. You can be a fan and be objective media journalist. Personally, I don't want Bears, Packers. Vikings fans telling me about the cowboys. I also think there is connection between the non-cowboy fan sports media in Dallas and lackluster fandom at home games.
