Why Marion Barber wins out in preseason

Jones's only issue so far is durability.

IF he can prove that he is a '16 game back' then Barber will remain a back up. Julius's talent and ability as a RB are much better that Barber's.

We all saw what Julius could do once healthy.

Will he remain healthy!?

That's another matter but I just can't see Barber winning the competition purely on talent and ability.

It's JJ's to lose...

JJ is and will remain the starting RB, Barber will be a nice 3rd down back and dumpoff guy in the pass game

JJ is your typical TB who would run best behind a FB...I think any impending move to using even more two TE sets was the handwriting on the wall. I don't see JJ being as effective as Barber.

JJ has more talent, but Barber is the more patient, deliberate runner who seems to set up his blocks and make one cut, then run with a good lean and power.

JJ is certainly the better big play back, but I think he needs a FB.

There are stats in one of the threads here somewhere that shows that to be false, JJ ran MUCH better in a one back set than he did with a FB

Anyone that says Julius runs best with a FB is not watching the games. All his big runs were out of the single back set. Go look at some of the highlight clips made by members here and see for yourself.

In a pig's eye.

Can someone please keep that pig outta Julius' face. :)

Barber will contribute, especially on 3rd downs or obvious passing downs, but Jones is the guy barring another injury. Thompson is on the bubble if the kid from South Carolina shows anything. All Thompson has shown is straight line speed on sweeps. There's been no evidence of any "wiggle" to avoid tacklers and he's not a bull who can run them over.

I thought the Cowboys didn't sign the kid from South Carolina.....

I sure hope this is the last RB discussion because you're comparing a guy who can put up 200 yrds when given ADEQUATE blocking to a guy who doesn't show ANYTHING game changing or amazing when he steps on the field. Julius Jones WILL be the starting runningback for the Cowboys it's up to him if he's ready to take the next step and work towards becoming great. Marion Barber is a great backup, because believe me he's got some decent skills, run, block, and catch! With that being said Barber doesn't show the brilliance you see from Jones just take a look back at the Carolina game when he got some pretty solid blocking!

MBIII is like Aveion Cason, too small to take the beating of a 16 game schedule.

Jones will get injured again so Barber will be our starting RB for most of the season although I hope Barber gets the start from Day 1. The only thing that really worries me about Barber is his fumbling but if he can get better at holding the ball I think he can be a very good RB in this league.

BTW this is just because I think Jones will eventually get hurt and it only hurts the running game having to change RB's mid in the season

I just edited my post to state why i prefer Barber over Jones from Day 1. Obviously Jones is a much more dangerous RB when healthy but thats the key he hasn't kept healthy and he gained weight last year to get stronger and that only appeared to make him slower

JJ

Obviously that's not the issue here.

Sorry for the quick response

:)

I still think that Jones is the better RB based on what we have seen from the both of them thus far

its kool. And I agree that Jones is the better RB of the two and i hope to God that he starts all 19 games ;) . But I just don't see him staying healthy all year and its not gonna help the running game having to change to a different style of back midway in the season.

Actually JJ is 5'9 and change. He is also around 212 now. Being short is a good thing for a RB: he is hard to see behind the line- LB's have a hard time seeing him before he is by them. Also being shorter there is less area to hit and its harder to lay big wood on him.

I really don't care whether it's Jones or Barber who get the nod initially as the starter, just as long the starter produces. I'm inclined to think that Parcells will pencil in Jones as the starter at least initially, although with Jones track record with injuries, I think it's a given that Barber will end up getting playing time as well, it's just a question of how much playing time.

The Answer is happy that we have both of these fine young prospects on our team. It really don't matter who is named the 'starter' at this point, neither of them are 35 carries a game type of backs and both will get a chance to make plays when called upon.

If both stay healthy, than JJ will likely be the 'starter' getting a bulk of the carries early on and will be a key contributor when we have a lead and play the time of possession game.

As for MBIII he will see action in passing situations since he's the better blocker and receiver.

This offense is going to be very exciting, we are loaded!

IMO Barber is just a more consistant type workhorse runner.

Didn't Barber split carries in college with Maroney at Minnesota? Barber has not shown he can be a consistent every down back nearly as much as Julius. I hope for nothing but the best for both of these guys, but I think if Julius can stay healthy he is a lock for the #1 RB position.

Welcome to the board...It is really great that you understand and know how to use all of those HTML codes and stuff. But really we are somewhat informal here...you don't need to do it for every little post. Save it for when you want to make a point and it will go to better effect. Of course that is up to you
