Why NFLE WAS A CATCH 22 FOR HENSON

I am one who was not happy about Henson going to NFLE despite the fact that I really want to see him get SOME KIND of action.

The negatives:

1. If he does well, even lights out well, there are plenty of people who will say it means nothing. And you know what is worst about that? They have a point. Rohan Davey is exhibit #1. We can also point to guys whose success there went on to prove genuine in the NFL, but the point is that nothing conclusive can be drawn from it.

2. If he does poorly for WHATEVER reason. I mean if he has no OL, no WR's and no running game, it won't matter. If Drew Henson does poorly it will solidify the whispers of him being a bust.

3. The talent, both against you and around you is less than what he faced in practice everyday.

4. It is like going through 2 training camps. Not exactly the best preparation for trying to play in the NFL in 2006.

For these reasons and a few others that I'm sure could be made, I just didn't think, and still don't, that it was a good thing for Henson.

The Positives:
1. It demonstrates, in my opinion, that the guy has a great attitude. "Whatever it takes to get better and to get to play".

2. It DOES get him into a competitive game atmosphere of some kind and he gets to play in games.

3. If he DOES do well, at least it has to be in the back of the minds of Cowboys brass that they MIGHT have a player here.

4. It showcases his talents to other teams if Henson ends up getting the opportunity to play elsewhere.

I don't think that he could afford to say no, yet, at the same time, I don't think it is the best thing for his career.
Forgetting the usual Romo versus Henson fight for a moment, do you agree with this analysis or not?

And crystal ball this for a second. Make a prediction. Look down the road 5 years. Will Drew Henson be able to say that he made a good choice?

I think it is a good decision for him. A few years ago I might not have said so, but at this point some competition is better than no competition, which is what he has had so far. It may not be NFL caliber, but at least he gets to play against people who wish to harm him and he needs to outperform. Godbless Henson.....I wish youi well.:starspin

This is a tremendous opportunity for Henson to show his stuff.

Nors, setting aside your support for Romo for a second. Just being objective. Do you really think that this was a good decision for Henson? If you were in his shoes you would have agreed to this?

Who gives a **** about what people "whisper" or who say it doesn't matter?

What matters is they get another way to evaluate a guy, that is just plain not an option.

If you don't think that what people say about players affects players, just follow the Peyton Manning story this week. His father cared. Peyton cared. Bill Polian cared. The offensive linemen probably cared. Terry Bradshaw cared. Several newspapers cared.

If you don't think that what people say about a young unproven player doesn't affect the player, then, I would humbly suggest you haven't noticed enough what happens every year in the NFL.

If he's not an option why evaluate him? That makes zero sense.

I am definitely hoping Henson becomes a player (and anyone that isn't hoping that obviously has some issues and isn't much a fan) and I think Europe is a good thing for Henson.

He doesn't need to go through an offseason program and get stronger. The coaches have finished tweaking his motion (for good or bad). He should know the offense by now.

He needs reps and he needs to get used to taking live snaps from center, moving in the pocket and working through his progressions.

If he doesn't show something in Europe, its probably time to move on.

It is best for Henson, after signing Bledsoe the chance of him seeing playing time went to zero unless Bledsoe goes down. The game experience will help and I at least can see him play:D

I am for it... I think he needs game experience more than anything else and it looks to me like this was his only venue

I'm for it, just because he needs the snaps and needs to play, regardless if its nfle. He's not going to play next year anyhow, unless Bledsoe gets hurt and even then who knows who they'll put in if so.

I'm ready for his first game to start! What channel/time?! :)

It might take a few games for him to get going, but I think he's gonna show his stuff...good stuff...

The experience will help him. He needs to play under fire. And if he shows growth and good decision-making skills, that could bode well for him if he were called on to start for the Cowboys.

The players are faster, but if you develop critical decision-making skills at the QB position, you can play in the NFL - ask Jake Delhomme.

Yeah, it's time. I still think he will be our Q.B of the future - but for him that future is now! This really is his time to show Jerry and Bill something, and I think he will be the MVP of NFLE.Come back ,stay where he is this year then compete with Drew in 07 for starter - it all comes down to this season in europe, for his sake he better make it happen...

You mean like how when Drew Bledsoe does poorly, for WHATEVER reason, I mean; no OL, no running game, it won't matter. If Drew Bledsoe does poorly it solidifies the whispers of him being an immobile slug who does nothing but hurt the team's he play's for?

Yeah.........;)

Junk has put it succinctly, I think. Henson needs to both play some football and show that he has some of the right stuff. There might be some risk if he has no line help at all but some who show performance in NFL Europe do play well in the NFL as well. I think if he shows well, the Cowboys can choose to hold on to him as the 'future' or trade him to another team who needs a future right now.

All in all, for someone in his position, there isn't much downside and a lot of potential upside.

Henson needs to get on the field, its obvious he isnt going to do that next year in Dallas unless Bledsoe and Romo go down.
