Why no trick plays?

I have been watching and cheering and crying for and with the cowboys since the 60s. I always loved the trick or misdirection plays that Tom would work into game plans. They did not always work but I always thought at least it made the other teams prepare for anything. Now, don"t get me wrong, the offense under Jason was very good and I am very pleased, but I think it is wonderful to just plain fool em every once in a while. This year I can't remember many plays where we even ran an end around or a reverse much less a flea flicker or halfback pass. I just believe that you don't always have to beat em with brawn, you can also beat em with wits. What do ya'll think?:star:

Yeah, it seems to have been pretty easy to pull trick plays on the Cowboys this year, though.

I would love to burn the gnats, e-gals, and dedskins with a trick play. Anything would do. LOL

Seems like those guys are always trying to pull something on us and returning the favor would be nice.

I've noticed the lack of these plays as well. Flea flicker, where ya at?!

Trick plays don't work as well as they once did yesteryear. Players are far faster and defenses are far more complicated with their disguises etc.

Besides, when you have a top 3-4 offense in the league - is there really a need for trick plays?

I disagree. Look at how many WR or HB passes or passes to LBs, OLs, & DLs have been thrown over the last couple of years and you will see that they work very well in this era. Reverses have also worked pretty well lately. LT has thrown a bunch of TD passes, Brady throws to Vrabel near the goalline often, Randle El has thrown passes, etc.

Defenses are faster now but that also means that they are more likely to be where you want them more quickly when you are running a trick play.

I think it is more that OUR trick plays haven't worked of late than that they won't work as well in this era. That is due more to our coaching and players than to how the game has changed.

Besides, when you have a top 3-4 offense in the league - is there really a need for trick plays?

Now that is a good point.

Funny you should mention that. As we were lining up for our last play against the Giants I was hoping we would run the old Bruce Coslet play where everyone starts right and the TE on the left side pretends to fall down. Then, when his guy chases the play to the right, the TE sprints out to the left corner of the end zone for an easy TD pass.

Why do a trick play when your conventional offense is performing at a high-level? To me, trick plays are when you need something to get your offense going. Didn't really need something like that until towards the end of the season.

Well the Steelers used a few mighty successfully in a SB win.

Did anyone else notice that at least once most every game, TO ran behind the RB as if to take a hand off on an end around? I never saw us actually give it to him. I kept expecting to finally see him get the ball in the Giants game, but it didn't happen.

I don't think we were performing at a particularly high level the last four games or so.

The 2005 Steelers? Their offense stunk in that game. They needed it.

The Cowboys offense was ridiculously potent for most of this season. They didn't really need trick plays. Sure, it would've been exciting for the fans, but they didn't really need it.

The Pats have a decent offense and they use a trick play every now and then. I think you have to run some of them just to get everyone thinking about it. I wondered the same thing all year.

We did have a couple under Parcells: the direct snap fake punt to Dexter Coakley which resulted in a 30-40 yard run (that was in 03 I believe), there was a time when Vinny Testaverde went out for a pass...obviously that didn't work and then there were a few flea flickers from Bledsoe to Glenn.

True, could have used a couple of them in the 2nd half of the play-off game against Giants, when we were backed up .

Exactly u dont need a crap offense to run trick plays, the saints used them many times last year and were pretty darn good offensively.I like them myself it keeps a defense on their toes. The more speed u have the better they work.We have no hester type speedy guys.none.
