Why not give Jaylon some SAM looks?

if Hitchens is playing well, why not try to get your best 3 on the field in base looks? Jaylon played exclusively in that sort of role his freshman year at ND and easily has the size to handle playing over a TE... it's also easier to get him involved in the blitz game as a SAM.

If we want to ease him in, that seems like it would be an ideal role for him, no? That position is typically less thinking and more reacting anyway, for a young guy that's always an easier role to excel in

Would be nice to get involved with blitzes... but Dallas don't blitz much. That's my only major complaint about the play calling on defense.

I dont think learning a lot of positions is best for a guy coming off of a near career ending injury ......

Lets be thankful for one miracle at a time.

I agree with this. Besides, MLB is much more physical and requires more contact. I don't know that I would want Smith to be subjected to that, at least until we know how the knee is going to hold up.

I think the "don't blitz policy" has more to do with not being able to get home with it with any amount of consistency. And if you can't get home, usually it hurts more than it helps, so...

With Jaylon at 100% (that will be key), he could be huge used in that capacity. He blitzed alot at ND and was pretty darn good at timing his blitz, sifting through traffic and getting home. I'm not sure exactly of his percentages, but I did see one highlight video dedicated to him just doing that, so I wouldn't be surprised to see him used in that capacity again.

In the nickel and dime (which is what defenses are in most of the time), there really isn't a SAM anyway in that sense.

Dependent on health, I'd imagine they'd lean towards Smith in favor of Hitchens in the Nickel along side Lee. Just based on college tape, I'd say Smith is better in coverage than Hitchens, but I could be wrong.

Actually, that's probably going to be a safety's job unless is short yardage. Chido perhaps?

Yep. I could see that, dependent on yardage. I'd say 3rd and 5 or longer, they may look Safety/Tweener like Chido. 3rd and 4 or less, Smith/Lee....but I don't think they'd feel all that exposed with Hitchen's out there in Smith's stead.

I think, at least some it, probably has to do with that. However, if you have watched our DC, over the years, he has never really been much of a Blitz guy.

IMO they will use him at SAM and other positions. Dude is going to line up all over the place.

Smith needs to play where he's protected & can play in space. He just doesn't have that "take on" mentality, for one. For another, he's too good in space not to take advantage of his unique skill set. He'll either play the Mike or Will spot, with Lee taking the other one. I'm sure they'll get switched around depending on the scheme & conditions.
