Why not Orton for an OG?

Look, I love having great insurance in case Romo goes down. But does anyone actually believe that if Romo went down, Orton would be good enough to win a Super Bowl for us?

It's not about whether you can win a SB with Orton if Romo goes down it's about staying in the hunt. If Romo were to go down for several games the Cowboys would have little to no chance of staying in the playoff race with Tanney or Stephens. If they traded Orton they would likely have to sign a veteran scrub who's on the streets and good luck winning games with them. You have to have a capable backup who knows your system to have any chance of hanging in if Romo were to go down.

See what develops on final cut downs. Never know when another team might not want to pay a decent OG on their roster. I dont want future picks traded though. Cook cost them the blocking TE they wanted in the 7th round.

Let me preface this post by saying...

1. I know that non-draft trades happen in the NFL about as often as Hostile hanging a Dan Bailey or Rafael Septien poster on his bedroom wall.

2. I know this is never going to happen.

But I'm just curious as to why I haven't even heard the idea floated. Orton is arguably the best backup QB in the NFL. There are a ton of teams that need desperate help at QB. We are weak at the OG spot. It makes sense to at least entertain the idea. Look, I love having great insurance in case Romo goes down. But does anyone actually believe that if Romo went down, Orton would be good enough to win a Super Bowl for us? I don't. I'd rather take my chances with Romo and have a quality RG than to have the great insurance and a big question mark protecting him.

Then again, I'd take my chances and roll without car insurance if given the choice, so maybe I'm just a thrill seeker.

Why not trade your spare tire for a Justin Beiber 8-track tape?

so someone who can't "get it done" will get us someone who can?

your own logic is just flawed.

This is dumb. A good backup is important. Look at the Steelers. I heard on ESPN that Big Ben hasn't played a complete season since like his first or second year. Luckily they could rely on Charlie Batch to win 2-3 games a year for them when Ben would go down for 4 games. You're missing out on the playoffs if your QB misses 4 games and you don't have a serviceable backup. I'd much rather have Orton than a mediocre OG.

QB's are the most valuable players in all of football. And while we feel we are Super Bowl or bust, there are teams (Jacksonville is the team that made me think of this in the first place) who would just like someone capable of guiding their team to a few wins. And I'm not looking for an All-Pro OG in return. I'm saying, the idea of a solid OG for a QB who would start for probably five or six bad teams isn't a horrible idea.

No, but it perhaps saves that QB going down in the first place. It may not play out that way but it at least makes sense.

And I don't think anyone really cares about your ignore list, dude. You don't need to announce that.

No thanks. Whatever middling guard we get in return probably won't make a huge difference, and if Romo goes out, without Orton there, it doesn't matter how our line is looking if we don't have a serviceable QB.

Let Orton hit the weight room and maybe next year if we still need a G he can fill that void at 325.

Why didn't they draft Larry Warford instead of drafting another TE. He is blocking everything , even at the second level in the game I am watching now. All of these questions and concerns wouldn't be going on about the RG position.

Exactly.......and so many on here said they liked the pick and continue to stand by Jerry and his bad moves. The only good move he made this offseason was the signing of Brandon Moore but of course we already no the end result for that

I will give Jerry credit for drafting Frederick and getting Williams to go along with it. I still don't understand this team's obsession with these TE's in the second round though. I'll have to give Escobar time to see how he pans out though.

With our luck shortly after completing the trade, Romo would go down quickly followed by the Guard we just traded for.

Still on the bright side we would then be in position to spend a top 10 pick on a Guard in next years draft.

Not sure that's a good idea. Orton is one of the best backups in the league. And there's no one here that can backup Orton.

no thanx, Orton isn't a starter, but he can manage games for us if needed...Arkin (for example) + Orton is better than an average OG + Stephens/Tanney

I look forward to seeing your rankings. o_O

Not my fault you believe in the Tooth Fairy- who has about as much validity as PFF rankings as have been shown by OGT and others. But then you are just looking for another excuse to do nothing on the O line. Which makes me believe you are a closet Commander FAN.

The funny thing is those that complain about PFF... Well I've never seen one ranking from anyone, by anyone... Never. To toss rocks without offering something is... well... doesn't support someone's position very well.

When I read the thread title, I thought the OP was suggesting the Cowboys start Orton at guard. Ha ha ha!

Silly me.

With some of the crazy suggestions and ideas that are posted Orton at guard might not even rank in the top 5 most bizarre things I've read on this board.

After seeing Tanney's play today, combined with the news of the Waters deal being dead... does anyone feel any differently about this idea? :)
