Why not put the band back together?

I have a "perfect" plan for us to return to the playoffs and hopefully a Super Bowl. First, let Millen and Detroit hire Parcells. In exchance for letting Parcells out of his contract, Detroit gives us a second round draft pick. (NFL Network said Millen and Parcells are very close and the rumor is Millen wants Parcells in Detroit. If that is the case, we may even be able to snag a first.)

Next, hire Jimmy Johnson as head coach. Jimmy said on Fox about a month ago that Jerry is the one owner he would coach for. I take that as a huge hint. Jimmy then hires Norv and Dave as assistants. Give them all a three-year contract for one last chance for them to win at a Super Bowl together. Jimmy would love that ego/accomplishment. At the very least, this plan would create a huge marketing buzz and I believe most of us would be excited about the future.

Next, trade Glover and Ellis for second or third round picks. Combine those picks with the one we receive for Parcells and Jimmy can wheel and deal like the old days. Draft day would be even better than last year.

So what do you think? Why not put the band back together?

#1, this isn't Madden. BP may leave but we wont wheel and deal. We dont get draft picks for seeing BP go to another team. But we still may trade back in the draft and pickup lots of midround picks something where BP hasnt had alot of success but will want to prove everyone wrong.
#2, we more likely will hire a college coach like Ferentz or Stoops or someone like Herm. Another disciplinarian type.

I would like their first, but I am not sure whether Jimmy wants to come back. He does have a chance to have his old coordinators so its definitely not out of teh question. Jimmy would be in great shape to lead us to the super bowl, especially with their top 10 pick.

Basically...it's too good to be true. That's all I can say.

why would you want Jimmy back? There is no Herschel Walker trade which is what made that team and duplication is very difficult. When BP leaves now or later, I want a young coach who will stay awhile.

As much as I like Bill, I'd take Jimmy back in a heartbeat. Bill is passionate, a great coach with a great football mind, but he is too conservative at times and lacks creativity in his game plans. Bill is a sure fire hall of famer, but Jimmy is the better coach IMHO.

If a coach under contract signs with another team compensation must be reached. Look at profootballtalk.com if you don't believe me.

Secondly, Jimmy Johnson would still coach if he also go total control. Jimmy does a much better job drafting second round picks than Parcells and hits just as well in the first round. You throw enoough money at him and he will leave the fox studio. I think he plans on coaching the Boys again, that is why he gave up that ludicrous contract in Detroit.

Great press...great marketing ploy for Jerry...great for everyone here because they won't have to read my posts about Parcells...

But it ain't gonna happen.

Jimmy said on Fox about a month ago that Jerry is the one owner he would coach for

Why does this get repeated so much. Jimmy was asked about Owners of the teams playing that day (thanksgiving) So his answer was Jerry out of 4 teams

Profootballtalk.com is nothing but links to team pages and is loaded with ads. The Gruden Deal with the Bucs/Raiders was the last of its kind, I know for a fact, the NFL made a rule regarding that. Jimmy, IMO would only come in for the right price if BP decides to go. Jimmy would have to act quickly with our roster and coaching staff if all of these guys are on other teams radars.

CLEARING THE AIR ON PICKS FOR COACHES

After the Bucs acquired Raiders coach Jon Gruden by sending a pack of picks to the pirates of Piedmont, the NFL circulated a memo that supposedly prohibited this practice.

As explained in the January 17, 2003 St. Petersburg Times, the Competition Committee had concluded that the use of draft picks to secure coaches could be undermining the purposes of the draft.

Not long thereafter, then-Bucs G.M. Rich McKay told ESPN.com that the memo was not intended to apply to head coaches.

At a time when there will be plenty of head coaching vacancies and not enough high-end candidates, some teams could be interested in guys who already are gainfully employed with other NFL teams. Thus, the possibility of using draft picks has come up again, and plenty of our readers wanted to know whether the practice was still permitted.

League spokesman Greg Aiello told us on Monday that draft picks can be used to acquire a head coach or a high-ranking club executive (such as G.M. or the equivalent). Draft choices cannot be used, per Aiello, to acquire coordinators, position coaches, or executives below the level of president or G.M.

So if they are assistants we cant send draft picks but if they are front office types or HC's we can. I get it now.

Since we're living in a fantasy world . . . why not bring back Landry?

Actually, I don't see why people are thinking this is so far fetched. I think the prospect of coaching the Cowboys again, especially now that Jerry has ceded much of his G.M. control to Bill, intrigues Jimmy.

Plus, all his assistant coaches are available, so, to me, that makes a return all the more plausible. Not more unlikely.

The "Trading Parcells for a draft pick" scenario seems more unlikely than Jimmy's return, IMHO.

Not that I really expect any of this to happen, but if we are dealing in hypotheticals, why not Jimmy/Norv/Butch Davis. All are available. Wanny has a job....for now.

I've chimed in on this in other threads, and the gist of my thinking regarding the topic is, stranger things have happened, especially in sports! Who would've thought Gibbs was coming back after turning down repeated job offers through a decade? If Jimmy had any kind of even miniscule latent desire to coach again, I'm willing to bet it's for the Cowboys.

Also, the availability of the assistants cannot be emphasized enough as a factor that would contribute to making it more of a reality. Everyone is bringing up Norv's availability, as well as Wanny's name since it is presumed he is miserable after his first season coaching the Pitt Panthers. However, take it further than that. Avezzano is available for special teams, Hoffman is sitting at home without kickers to coach, Tony Wise is sitting at home after an admittedly disastrous season in '04 with the Dolphins, Butch, as someone else did bring up, is also available, and Hubbard Alexander is as well to my knowledge.

Couple that with potentially extra draft picks available if there is a Parcells exit to another coaching or GM (as being rumored w/ the Jets) position, and you really might have a fertile environment for this kind of crazy move to go down. I don't think there's any doubt that Jerry would revel in the PR. It would also be eeringly similar to the Washington situation from two offseasons ago, when everyone looked at Snyder after his big name coaching acquisition had quit on him after 3 seasons and he turned back the clock and defied the odds with his hire.

Yes that trade built the dynasty..but look at some of his finer coached games, for instance Washingtons SB year when he simply outcoached Gibbs in that head to head game. JJ is a great coach.

BP stays here another year. I doubt he is unhappy with Jerruh, at least that's no the impression i got from JJ when he was asked about the situation.

If BP not having the fire is the main reason that people think he will be gone, why would he walk into another mess when he looks to have just about cleaned up the one he inherited in Dallas

Hah hah, wouldn't it be funny if we were able to turn Parcells into getting us a couple draft picks? Who knows, it could turn into a mini-Walker trade.

I don't see any chance that any of this occurs, but another important note is Dave Wannstedt just became the head coach at Pitt, hes not going to leave his alma matter after one year to come be our DC.
