Why not Riley?

plus he is a college coach to NFL and there is no matter how you cut it, a learning curve. so if you are ready to throw away the next couple of years then by all means hire him and lets experiment. if you feel this team is ready to make the leap and compete in playoffs, then a college coach can't do it....

For this very reason.. I would like Greg Roman.

Obviously, none of us have any say in the hire.. hence the reason why I wanted to know more ab Riley, if he happens to be the choice

he is a college coach and frankly I am not very impressed with his team or offense. he runs a spread offense, which most colleges do and floods the passing lanes with WRs against lesser DBs. most colleges do this and it comes down to recruiting and talent on the team. in the NFL his offense won't be effective.

sure theres a learning curve.
thats why pairing him with a veteran coach at D Coord would serve him well.
and there are examples that Jerry hasnt hit home runs with hiring NFL asst's to the HC spot...Chan Gailey,Dave Campo,Wade Phillips,Jason Garrett.

the only model that has worked here is a college coach or a legend no one thought possible.

I posted this in another thread.. figured it needed it’s on thread. (Recently deleted previous post)

I’ve seen many people say “Who they want..”, but because I don’t follow Oklahoma football and don’t know much about Lincoln Riley..

Im curious why some have said they don’t want Riley. Could you please elaborate why?

From what I’ve read, he has a great overall coaching record..albeit a short one. In that short time, he coached 2 Heisman trophy winners in Mayfield and Murray. And put together a pretty nice offensive resume along the way. So, I’m not advocating for him as much as I don’t know what’s not to like?

Just FYI.. from what I’ve also read, it seems likely he could very well be the Cowboys next HC based on his connection and familiarity with the Jones’s. Some may not know he became pretty close with the Jones while recruiting JJ’s grandson QB John Jones before he ended up committing to the Jones Alma Mater, Arkansas.

If Dallas is going to pull someone from the college ranks.. Please tell me why Lincoln Riley wouldn’t be a good Candidate?

EXTREMELY easy. Riley like Meyer are college coaches and college coaches as 1st NFL head coaches have such a dismal horrible record with their first team, it's a wonder why any team still tries that route. The odds are so high for failure, they're even worse tthan the odds of the hail mary pass for a TD to win games or tying Tony Dorsett's record 99 yard run.

I'm not one to shy away from College coaches, my dream candidate is Urban Meyer.

Besides what previous posters have thrown in, my main concern is that he has a very short coaching history. I also fear he's inherited a decent team, which is successful with a decent scheme.

Not in my top 5, for sure. In fact, I'd go as far to say I don't care for him as HC at all for the Cowboys.

Learning curve? Jeez, we just spent 9 years on the Garrett curve. We can probably handle a year more for a good coach after that

People don’t want him because he is a college coach and there is the belief out there that college coaches can’t make it in the NFL.

I want Riley here

It's not a belief but facts. college coaches as 1st NFL head coaches have such a dismal horrible record with that 1st team. Try and name all of the college coaches as 1st time NFL head coaches that won a Super Bowl with their first team. How many decades do you have to go back?

Anyone is better than Garrett. Riley though is far too inexperienced. Guy has 3 years at Oklahoma. His defenses have been awful. His whole system was badly exposed by a real LSU defense. The Dallas roster is entitled. They will not respect him. This next hire needs to be a fearsome leader. It is the only chance they have.

I agree.

I know the HC hire is most important, but I think the next DC is just as important. I mean, any HC worth their jockstrap should be able to make our offense worthy.. it’s the defense that will be the challenge.

Jimmy Johnson

My concern is who he would get as his DC. I think he would do well in the NFL but he absolutely needs a really good DC, IMO.

This team needs an experienced person who can change team culture and who can put big money pro players in their place. Needs to have the players respect and the HC should have buy in from Jerry that he will take the back seat so there is a clear line of power

Riley is too green
He only has an offensive back ground
He has a really bad post season record losing all 3 playoff games

I’m not a fan

Pretty much this. Limited experience and short history of getting wrecked in important games.

I Like Rhule better than Ryan I think

Here are a few who have made the jump successfully other than Jimmy.
Chip Kelly Tom Coughlin Barry Switzer Jim Harbaugh Paul Brown Don Coryell ]Dick Vermeil Pete Carroll Bill Walsh

This argument that you cant jump from college to the NFL and be immediately successful is a "fake thread argument" Here is a better question, name a NFL coach who didn't coach in college, I'll add this for fodder also: your track record in the NFL as a DC or OC doesn't add up to automatic or immediate success either ask Josh McDaniel's or Wade Phillips for that matter.[/QUOTE]
