This thought has occurred in my mind a lot and while I understand why you if your Jerry you chose Dez over Murry but why don't you franchise tag Murry for the next season and resign Dez with a huge contact? You keep both the two for the next season and then in the offseason you resign Murry.

Murray will get too much money under the franchise tag. The tag is inflated when compared to how teams hold a RBs value. We would be overpaying greatly to tag Murray.

Demarco is the more replaceable player. Keeping Dez is a must. Signing Dez is the priority so you have to reserve the franchise tag for him just in case you don't get a new deal for him.

The Cowboys have an offer for 4 years/16 million on the table, they're not going to pay Murray 10+ million for a single season, that's roughly what the tag costs for a RB.

Because that would commit a ridiculous amount of money to Murray for one season– approximately $9 mil.

It may be worse than that.

It seems they have changed the way the franchise tag is calculated, now it is just a percentage of the cap number based on position. So for RBs the franchise tag is 7.643% of the total cap number. With a cap between 140 and 145 that's a franchise tag cost of 10.7 - 11.1 million.

That's based on two articles I saw written in October.

You're right.

That makes it even worse.

Needless to say if the Cowboys started the contract talk at 4 for 16, then I don't see them considering the franchise tag for the guy.

This thought has occurred in my mind a lot and while I understand why you if your Jerry you chose Dez over Murry but why don't you franchise tag Murry for the next season and resign Dez with a huge contact? You keep both the two for the next season and then in the offseason you resign Murry.

If anything, I would think it would be the other way around.

I assume when you are buying a car, you would rather pay market value of $25K rather than locking in to a price of $40K for the same car.

If they sign Dez and do not have to use the franchise tag on him that frees up the use of the transition tag for Murray which would not include the high price tag, however we would then be given the right to match any offer he got within 7 days and retain his services (while at the same seeing what the market would be willing to pay him).

Not sure if that is what the OP meant, but there is a possibility that Dallas would do that if they were to sign Dez..

thats the Peterson contract that is over-inflating Franchise tag for RB.

The transition tag is still ridiculously high. Per an article in October of 14 the numbers for each are simply percentage based now, it's not the average of the top 5 or top 10 salaries. The transition number is only slightly lower than the franchise number, at 9 million dollars, with the franchise costing nearly 11 million for the year. Those numbers are based on a 143 million dollar cap.

Jerry has too many off the field concerns with Dez to sign him to a huge contract which is why he's holding off. The best offer Jerry made was a 10 year deal worth $114M with only $20M guaranteed and only a $5M signing bonus. The Cowboys are so concerned about Dez off the field he has a manager with him at all times and is undergoing anger management. Click the link and watch the video.
