Why not tag Murray and resign Dez?

The tag for a RB is about $11 million......................no back in the league is worth that much on a one year deal, not even Peterson.

It would be totally stupid to tag Murray and pay him that much on a one year deal, he is just not worth that much money.

That fumble in the playoff game also comes into context here. I aint paying $11 million to a guy who fumbled away a game-sealing TD run. That fumble cost us a trip to the NFCCG.

He wouldn't have scored on that play and if he had how could it have "sealed" the game with over 12 minutes to go in the 4th quarter? Had the Cowboys scored a TD on that drive they would have had an 11 point lead with plenty of time for Aaron Rodgers to bring the Packers back. The Cowboys D couldn't stop him in the second half. On the Packers final drive they moved right down the field just looking to eat up the clock and they could have scored had they needed to. Rodgers ended up taking a knee 3 times with 1:43 remaining.

Because paying a running back that much money is ludicrous and we need that money for more pressing needs.

Jerry has too many off the field concerns with Dez to sign him to a huge contract which is why he's holding off. The best offer Jerry made was a 10 year deal worth $114M with only $20M guaranteed and only a $5M signing bonus. The Cowboys are so concerned about Dez off the field he has a manager with him at all times and is undergoing anger management. Click the link and watch the video.

Rapaport isn't exactly the most reliable source. He's always looking to stir the pot with his "sources" and "inside info". It was already proven by many on here that the police calls were years ago where Dez wasn't even present. I wouldn't believe anything that hack reports. If the most evidence you have of Jerry's concern of Dez is Rapaport's "sources" your argument is weak.

Yes, he likely would have scored on that play. If you look at the All-22, there was nobody in place to get him if he gets past Peppers.

A TD there does not guarantee victory, but in a close game if drastically increases the probability of a victory, especially considering that he not caused the Cowboys drive to not result in a score be he gave the ball to the Packers.

No. Let Murray test FA. If we sign/tag Murray fast we will most likely be overpaying just like they did by tagging Spencer back to back. Spencer wasn't even the best pass rusher and ended up getting payed more than Bennett who signed with the seahawks for 4.8 mil

We can only speculate how far Murray would have gone on that play had he not fumbled. Watching the Cowboys defense give up play after the play in the passing game an 11 point lead would have been far safe with 12 minutes to play in the 3rd quarter. It was a costly fumble by Murray but that one play isn't the reason the Cowboys lost the game.

Only plays made at the very end of games are guaranteed game winners, but the probability of winning would have been drastically higher if he had not fumbled. He was highly likely to either score or put the Cowboys very close to the endzone if he didn't score. Giving the Packers good field position was also very bad.

On top of that he was carrying the ball in a "Loosey-Goosey" fashion which made it even worse.

If Rapoport's information was completely unreliable and he was a total hack just looking to stir the pot I doubt he would still have a job as an insider for NFLN. Many have mentioned his reports concerning the Cowboys off the field concerns with Dez do a google search. I'm certainly not saying everything reported by Rapoport is accurate information but comments made by Jerry and the contract offer he made with only $20M guaranteed and only a $5M signing bonus says there's at least some truth to what Rapport is reporting.

Jerry told Norm Hitzges that he has to know he can trust Dez with a lot of money. What exactly do you think Jerry meant by that? If Jerry trusted Dez how come he only guaranteed him $20 and only offered a $5M signing bonus? Do you believe the reports by Rapoport that Dez has a manager with him at all times and is undergoing anger management? If you do a search it was reported that Dez was ordered to undergo anger management after the incident with his mom.

The probability of winning would have been higher had the Cowboys not thrown the ball on a 3rd and one from the Packers 32 yard line just before the half. They had a 14-7 lead and the bad play call led to a blocked FG attempt. With only 29 seconds left the Cowboys defense allowed Green Bay to move from the Cowboys 40 to the Packers 22 yard line and kick a FG. Instead of the Cowboys being up 17-7 or possibly 21-7 at the half they were clinging to a 4 point lead. The Packers drive in the final 29 seconds of the first half set the tone for the second half. There's no assurances the Cowboys would have scored had Murray not fumbled.

Bailey started looking shaky the previous week pushing a 41 yard FG vs the Lions. His first FG attempt vs the Packers before the half was pushed right but a pre snap penalty on the Cowboys just prior to his kick gave him another opportunity and that one was blocked. With the cold weather conditions and Bailey not looking steady as usual no guarantee he would have converted a FG or the Cowboys would have scored a TD had Murray not fumbled. There's no question the fumble was costly but there were many other plays that helped cost the Cowboys that game. Had the Cowboys defense not missed so many tackles especially on Adams allowing some big runs after the catch the probability of the Cowboys winning would have been drastically higher.

This thought has occurred in my mind a lot and while I understand why you if your Jerry you chose Dez over Murry but why don't you franchise tag Murry for the next season and resign Dez with a huge contact? You keep both the two for the next season and then in the offseason you resign Murry.

It's not a bad plan at all, but Dez needs to sign first and by March 2nd.

The cost will be high to tag Murray, but it limits the risk to one year if he did take too many hits last year. I would rather work out a 4/28m deal that paid him 12m over the next 2 years, but he may not go for it.

Signing Dez and Murray will impact the rest of Free Agency and they won't bring in a Suh or Hardy if they sign them both, but they may not have been signing them anyways so at least use the money on resigning Cowboys.

We are going to franchise Dez and then sign Murray, it's a weird numbers thing and that's just how it falls for us this time around...

We gotta pay Romo 17 million for 2015 unless that gets reworked and Witten is getting big paper as well, we're like the freaken NY Yankees ova heeyah....

If we sign Dez and franchise Murray, we lose so many contributors we become and 8-8 team again.

Note to self and all: If you have a crazy idea use it in a thread, don't create one so we all see/focus on the crazy.

Murray is really, really good but you can't pay a back 11m today and prosper. Not if you also have a highly paid QB.
And you certainly can't pay a franchise QB, a franchise LT, a franchise RB, and a franchise WR all at the same time.
Someone has to take a short end of the stick there.

Dez is truly special and he has been ascending rapidly at a position where guys have a longer shelf life. If you need to franchise someone it will be him.

I disagree, but it's a moot point now.

Murray still is not worth $11 mill

Disagree all you want we'll never know. Let me ask you this and give me an honest answer do you think the Cowboys would have had the season they did and Romo would have had the efficient season he did in 2014 had it not been for Murray and the running game?

If you are talking about re-signing our own FAs then that is just not the case. Dallas can sign Dez, tag Murray and sign most of their guys like McClain, Free, Durant, Moore, Leary, Beasley and Spencer.

They would even have some left for a couple mid level FAs.

That's not really or necessarily accurate.
Dallas has 20 free agents and if they kept 15 of those with Dez and Murray around they'd likely be in serious cap restructure mode.
It is impossible to say what any of these guys cost much the lot of them. But is is very possible you could do a restructure for Romo and eat that PLUS the current cap space and sign JUST Dez and franchise Demarco.
We obviously could do more restructures but we've begun to strike a balance there.

Dallas is hardly hurting but they are not in pay everyone what they want mode either.
They will have to make some tough decisions and they need value players but just valued players.
