Why Sam Hurd might be a keeper

So i was able to go to a practice yesterday and the scrimmage today, and something really struck me about everyone's hot name right now, Sam Hurd.

Yes, he looks great, he's quick, and tall and has good hands.

But what was most interesting was this:

We all know Hurd's been working with TO. But better than that, he's a quick study.

After practice on friday, he asked TO about a problem he had catching the ball when he had to jump over the defender. They talked a bit about it, then TO took him out and set up a drill with the practice dummies where Hurd had to catch over them. They worked on it for about 25 minutes, TO throwing Hurd catching. They then went to the juggs machine and worked there for at least another 20 minutes (they were still going when i left).

Cut to today's scrimmage. Twice hurd was in the situation of having to catch a ball while reaching over the defender, and twice he did it. His hard work paid off big time.

After the scrimmage he worked with TO again on the juggs machine for another 45 minutes.

I've seen it reported that the two 'work together for a couple minutes after practice'. To me that doesn't really tell the whole story. I hear that and think 5-10, not 45.

So the kid's got skills, and he's working hard on them. And no matter what your opinion is on 81, he doesn't have to be helping the kid out like this. Just something to ponder.

Hurd, Copper and Rector are fighting for one spot, because I can't imagine anyone beating Owens, Glenn, Crayton or Green out.

Quit messing up my prejudice against TO! Good to hear Hurd is really grabbing at his chance. He'll stick somewhere if he keeps that up.

Hopefully he sticks here because let's face it.. our WR's are getting any younger.

I expect we will lose some of our guys, who won't make it to the practice squad. I still expect three to five guys to get picked up by the Saints. They know our players well, and they have an iffy linebacker corps. Wouldn't be surprised to see a WR go there as well, 'specially since some of them know the offensive system already.

I just hope he's not another Randall Williams, so I shall wait for preseason before I make a determination on him, but I will say this, he has caught my eye along w/ the rest of Cowboy nation

var clickExpire = "-1"; Sam Hurd Grade: 3.14 Position: WR
Class: Sr
School: N Illinois
Conference: Mid-American
Ht., Wt.: 6-3, 195
40 Time: 4.61

BIO: Three-year starter and All-Conference selection as a senior after leading the team with career numbers of 65/1,074/13.

POSITIVES: Reliable wideout who consistently comes up with the important reception. Finds the open spot on the field or sneaks behind the defense. Boxes out opponents with his frame, extends to pull the ball from the air and exposes himself to the big hit in order to make the reception. Displays solid eye/hand coordination and outstanding timing. Gives effort blocking and gets results.

NEGATIVES: Slow releasing off the line, cannot run to the deep ball and lacks a second gear. Must improve his route-running skills.

ANALYSIS: A big-play receiver on the college level, Hurd is one of the more underrated wideouts in the draft. Lacks classic size/speed numbers yet should have no problem making a roster in the NFL.

PROJECTION: Undrafted Free Agent

I agree and would add that I don't think he's another Randall Williams.... Hurd is lucky enough to play with and learn from one of the best WRs in the game (Williams never had that chance). Also, Hurd seems more than willing to put in the extra time to get better... I don't think Williams did. With Randall's size and speed, could you imagine if he had the work ethic and ability to learn from TO??? Damn, he could have been a good one.

The NIU football program is no joke, they play against top competition and have a coach that is respected the league over. Hurd is a player with exceptional hands that never seemed to get the look he deserved. If I had to make a comparison, Chrebet is who comes to mind.

all true, but Randall Williams was catching everything in practice, including some very, nice highlight reel grabs, in TC, but once preseason rolled around, he was like a deer caught in the headlights, so I have my reservations

bad comparison, I know both are from the same town in New Jersey, but that's where the comparisons end

Care to enlighten me on why its a bad comparison? Hurd is a hands guy that wont ever blow anyone away with his speed. I think it is a vary valid comparison seeing as how I watch NIU on a weekly basis.

because when Chebret was coming out, noone mistook him for being anything remotely athletic, which was a mistake of course

from FFToolbox.com

Position:WRNumber:84School:Northern IllinoisHeight:6'2Status:DeclaredWeight:187
  • This is a player at the wide receiver position that catches everything thrown his way
  • He has an excellent pair of hands, along with good eye-hand coordination, and the concentration on catching the ball I have not seen in some time, he really takes pride in catching everything thrown his way, who runs crisp precise route patterns
  • He is not a overwhelming athletic presence on the field, but he has good height, better than average athlete, and has the knack for finding open spaces in a defense for his quarterback to find him
  • He is a receiver that may not be great at any one thing but has the overall skill set to become a outstanding second receiver on the next level
  • I am anxious to see more evaluation time on this player, I like his all out approach to the game

From DraftDaddy.com

WR Sam Hurd ~ Northern Illinois -- Tall (6‘ 2", 188), sure handed receiver, who loves to block and does it well. Had 65 receptions for 1,074 yards and 13 TD’s in 2005. Speed "might" be an issue in the NFL’s eyes, but this omission is still a surprise to us. Had 7 receptions for 233 yards and 2 touchdowns against Miami (Ohio) and NFL prospect Darrell Hunter (CB) in early October. Scary thing is, that wasn't even his best game of 2005.

Sorry to go off-topic, but where is northern illinois located? I go to school in urbana... I'll have to check out the NIU football program.
