Why Smith over Jack

The rumors are that they think Smith's knee can get better while Jack's could be a degenerative thing over time. So if they are thinking long term, Smith might actually be the better long term investment.

Exactly right. One knee will heal - one might not.

Smith can probably play the MIKE. I was thinking about him and Jack before today and was thinking that if both really fell (say 4th round) that Smith would be the better fit for us since Lee is still at the WILL. You put Jack at the MIKE and I don't think it's a good way to use him. Of course, you could move Lee back to the MIKE, but I would rather not. With Jack, if you listen to the scouts, they believe he could play SS and be great at it. That would intrigue me. A guy that big and fast that hits like a linebacker and cover like a corner.

And fwiw IMO Smith is the better LB

Two completely torn ligaments and nerve aren't? Don't even know if it will heal.

True, at this point they are just waiting on nerve for Smith. But if it comes back he should be fine and have no real long term effects.

But the rumors are Jacks knee is at a point where over a time period, short or long, his knee could get worse and worse.

It's simple JJ had the inside scoop on one player. JJ knew how bad it was and his time table for recovery. Gamble on what you know.

Personally, I think Smith is a better prospect. And Jack's knee is degenerative.

This.

All indications are that Jack's knee is most definitely getting worse, while Smith's is in the process of getting better.

Seems like the consensus is that Smith is the better LB anyway. He's being compared to Luke Keuchly for crying out loud.

Like someone else said in another thread- if you could snatch a LB that good but have to sit him for the 1st year, would you take him? I think you'd be crazy not to.

Jack will play this year. Smith will not play this year and may not ever play football again.

Yes, people are now assuming its a matter of time before Smith comes back 100%. 1st we don't know if he comes back at all. Working out is not the same as playing full contact football. If he does come back he maybe a shell of himself.

I probably wouldn't have taken either at 34. If you force me to pick one I take Jack because at least I know he'll get on the field.
