so tony romo plays golf. so what?

michael jordan played golf in the offseason. ben roethlisberger plays golf in the offseason. troy aikman and emmitt smith played golf in the offseason. lots of athletes play golf. so what?!

(personally, i think golf is a waste of time, and athletes would be better doing something like crossfit in the offseason, but whatever.)

kareem abdul-jabbar practiced yoga. herschel walker practiced ballet (!). lots of athletes practice a martial art. having another physical activity outside of their sport helps them stay sharp and refreshed but also stay in tune with their bodies.

romo's quotes about golf helping him improve and focus on football show he's not just fooling around. his quotes about picking the brains of other successful, elite athletes show he has a singular focus on being one of the best. AND, his quotes about realizing how insignificant he is outside his sport show he's NOT a hollywood kind of guy.

i know this is a dead horse, but the latest story on romo and tiger woods stirred up the old canards... i just don't get how anyone can believe he has anything but the right attitude.

One you don't play it so I guess there is a lack of understanding. For some the game is nothing more than hitting a white ball but a big part of the game is game management to work your way around the course facing many difficulties along the way. To be able to put the last shot behind you good or bad and to be able to maintain focus over the course of the round. For those who play it which are many athletes in all sports it is enjoyable and presents a great challenge as they try and master a difficult game

the big difference is that Emmitt and Troy would golf leisurely. Romo is good enough that he gets into tournaments that are extended. Throw on top of this a hugely poor timed trip to mexico before playoff run that has been very unpopular with fans. Then on top of all that...you get this "oh golly we'll get em next time" presentation after his playoff losses and do you do come away unconvinced he has the "will it to happen" attitude so many of the greats had. The best thing that can happen for Romo is that Kitna and McGee have great camps and Romo acquires a sense of urgency that his "hollywood run" might not last as long as he thinks.

Romo's aware that people will use any excuse to leap to the wrong conclusion. It doesn't mean that he did anything even slightly wrong by golfing, or by spending a quiet weekend with other players in Mexico.

It does mean that if you understand that people we react emotionally but irrationally, you can avoid unpleasantness for yourself to the extent you don't feed their expectations. Since being dogged by irrelevant stories all year eventually takes a toll on you mentally, you're seeing him protect himself more this offseason. I expect fans will be happier as a result, though some of them will still fall for the old head-fake like they did with the anonymously sourced conditioning rumors JFE circulated a while back.

Romo also plays Soccer( competively in some amatuer/Rec League in DFW area, I belive close to Colleyville) and also basketball in Offseason. So its just not Golf. And he plays Soccer etc. to stay fit ( well he does go to Colleyville Lifetime Fitness usually late evenings I believe, from people who seen him there, in off season).

I am begining to think half the people that ***** about "hollywood" and golf are jealous of tony's life.

nothing but a bunch of haters who wish they could live the life he does and are bitter that thier lives suck compared to Romo's.

To play at the level that Tony Romo is playing takes a lot of hard work and practice. He plays at a MUCH MUCH higher level than Aikman, Emmitt, Roethlisberger and others. He also plays at much more competitive tournaments than any of those guys play in. So you start to think that time that could be used to become a better QB is being used to become a better golfer. If he was just playing a few times a week for fun, I would say that it's ridiculous to criticize him. But playing at the level he plays at makes you wonder. Furthermore, those guys mentioned all had world championships to their credit and Romo cannot get his team to win a playoff game.

I'm not so sure it really matters because Romo has been very good in the months that he would/could play golf. But I can see why people who criticize him think it effects his play as a QB.

I'm glad the guy plays golf instead of living at strip clubs, chasing every skirt that walks, and doing every drug in the book like some guys in the league do in their spare time.

It is about as good and harmless as it gets....we should all be elated.

Off hand there are two QBs in the league that are somewhat similar to Tony as far as spending off-field time: Ben Rothlisberger and Tom Brady. They are out and about, Bif Ben is similar to Tony with golf...but also does some crazy stuff, Brady is everywhere. But like Tony, they still focus hard on football and love the game.

My IQ gets lower just reading posts from people that think golf actually hurts Tony as our QB.

Hater or not, anyone who denies wanting to be in his shoes is just flat out lying.

With that said, anyone who cries rivers on Tony's behalf and claims that all the criticism is unjust is equally delusional.

the criticism based on stupid stuff that is based on tabloid type BS is completely ridiculous.

most players play golf, tony is naturally good at it, as he is a ton of other sports. Folks think he practices all the time and that's just stupid, he is just a really good golfer who loves to play and compete.

and who cares if he is dating a starlet, she is hot and from dallas, they have been together for a long time, so I say kudos to the young man for snagging a hot texan girl.

There's a huge gap between 'all the criticism' and 'the criticism of his golf game, his vacation habits, his leadership, his conditioning, his girlfriend, whether or not he's a racist, and whether or not he tries too hard to be Tom Brady.'

There's plenty of room to criticize Tony for his fumbles. For inopportune picks. For his flippant attitude. There are open questions about his ability to play big in the biggest games. I don't know that there's anyone on the board who doesn't recognize or freely admit this.

I agree. I see nothing wrong with fair criticism of any player Romo included but some go off on the deep end and slam him for anything he does. Romo like any player does have a private life and deserves it just as much as anyone.

So he plays golf and has a hot girl friend who is famous it is not like he is out doing drugs or getting into trouble with the law which many around here seem not to have much issue with as they continue to say Oh he deserves a second chance.

Romo is far from perfect but I think he is a damn good QB and feel lucky to have him as ours

if playing golf in the off-season can help him in any way in the regular-season, be it physical, mental, etc, then by all means, swing away Tony!
