Maybe it's just me...

But IMO (and I'm not a football coach) you're going to see a lot more zone defense played AGAINST west coast offenses. The WCO is predicated on using multiple WRs and using backs as receivers to gain open space... short routes, rubbing routes, swing passes, dump offs and screens.

Think about it. If you have man to man coverage, your CBs are chasing WRs around the field, and you're usually leaving a LB on the RB. A lot of times, the WR will not be running a route so that he can get open, but one of his teammates. If you get all WRs running out of a zone and CBs following them, if one guy gets open, it's a big gainer. If you get a RB on a LB man to man and he makes one move, the CBs in man will have their backs to the play, and open up big spaces in the field.

The mentality of the zone is to try to cut down on open spaces on the field. If the WCO runs a screen pass, what would you rather have staring down 3 OL and the RB? that one LB who is responsible for the RB, or the LB, the CB in that zone, and the Safety coming up for support?

The WCO is designes to find huge open spaces on the field for big gains. If Zones place guys strategically to remove these big spaces, then I'll go with Zone more often.

But like I said, maybe that's just me.
