The Cowboys need to re-work QB Dak Prescott’s contract at some point before 2024, so the Justin Herbert extension is relevant.

Herbert’s deal is noted as five years, $262.5 million, the biggest ever for the NFL. On the surface you would think that this would be bad news for the Cowboys, as Dak Prescott’s own $40 million per year contract has only about 18 months left before it expires.

This is good news for the Cowboys in two ways. First, it gives them a precedent to point to in negotiations with Dak’s agent, that other quarterbacks are signing deals early and still reaching the top of the market. Second, it gives the Cowboys some precedent to point to if other veteran players try to use a new Dak extension as justification that they need a new deal with two years remaining. The Cowboys can claim a ‘QB exception rule’ for revisiting deals that early.

The next aspect of the extension that is good news for the Cowboys is the length of the deal, Herbert’s contract makes eight of the top-10 quarterback contracts in annual value, that are all at least five-year contracts. Herbert, Lamar Jackson, Jalen Hurts, Russell Wilson, Kyler Murray, Pat Mahomes, Deshaun Watson, and Josh Allen have all signed at least five-year contracts, with all but Jackson and Watson signing those deals as extensions.

...A five-year extension is much more valuable to the team than a four-year deal because of the freedom it gives Stephen Jones and Adam Prasifka to move the cap charges around year to year. Dak has a great deal of leverage in his negotiations with the team because he is their most important player and the keystone the team is built around. But the Justin Herbert contract, as well as the other recent quarterback deals have given the Cowboys some help as they go to Dak’s camp with a clear outline of what the his value is on the quarterback market, with a great deal of certainty.

It would be good news for Dak, except if we don't make the NFC championship, he will be looking for another team within 2 years. I am a Dak fan, but time to put it all together and make a run in the playoffs. If he is the reason we get eliminated in the playoffs. He is gone, if he puts up great numbers but the defense lets us down. Then Mccarthy is gone.

This is the one thing I'm totally against Dak for the sake of the team: paying him $50+ mil/year. That's just crazy and extremely team debilitating stuff. Them owners have lost it. $40 mil/year is already too much for any starting QB. Now it's up to $52 mil/year?

Hey, don't even go there with a ton of sobs. Everyone knows already what is on the line.

This is to discuss alternatives and actually talk about how things are affected and change...not a non-ending run to the john at the drop of a hat.

C'mon, the none ending crying only is real so much. This isn't the topic of discussion.

Who cares the crying towel is dragged across the floor and displayed in the window of the latrine?

This is a current event and why it is relevant. Listen or just grow up some.

You care if a quarterback is paid 15% of the cap total...for real? I don't believe that a second.

Dak may get 250 for a 4 year deal.

as for herbert, he has only made playoffs once and was one and done and only scored 3 points in 2nd half in the loss.
I think coaching played into that loss,, but these qbs today get the infamous market value deals regardless of what they have done.
The owners are to blame for these inflated deals.

I think how much the players get paid, should all be secret, instead the nfl just throws it out there like they are proud of how stupid they are ! lol

First, he's a very good quarterback. He is a tall quarterback who's receivers as a group are very tall and even able to vertically get open against many smaller cornerbacks as well. He's good in San Diego.

The point is that the market now is shifting to five year contracts to protect cap and make it even more useable to support team cap pictures.

I wish Dak's annual salary only compromised of 15% of this year's (2023) $225,000,000 team salary cap. That would mean Dak would only be making $33,750,000. That would sound just about right...and be $6.5 million cheaper than the $40 million he is currently making per year.

If the Cowboys take the cheese and follow the top QB pay happening right now at $52,000,000 million/year, that would account for 23.11% of this year's team full salary cap. Imagine that? That's crazy!

While we're on the subject of how much Dak's $40 million/year salary is costing the team's $225 million salary cap space limit right now, Dak's $40 mil/year is using up 18% of the team's full salary cap space. That's a lot more than the 15% you guesstimated.

Now do you see why I don't agree with increasing the already overpaid pay per year?

No, as presented, it improved the projection and added a year making it more flexable as the years are added upon. That is a projection and highly relevant in the present.

This is a quarterback driven league. One doubt that. Here today, the top shelf isn't in question. What is in question is if McCarthy can direct his team and if Dak Prescott is in the barn to do it...or not.

If 20-26% of the cap is the fear...forged in fire and came out steel. That is just a piece of the whole already on the table in chips for the hand dealt. The gamble already warrants the chips played. Are we ready for an aggressive sport or not?

Camp town lady sing your song...do da...do da...camp town lady sing your song, all the do da day.

Going to run all day, going to run all night, bet my money on a bob-tailed nag, somebody bet on the bay!!

Troy Aikman was a 3 Lombardi Hall Member and a pretty good football analyst. He's pulling for Dak and so am I.

By the end of this very season, the make-up of this entire team will be shown.

The cap issues will take care of themselves when this very team reveals leadership, locker room, and talents challenged....always, challenged!!

The last year the Cowboys won the Super Bowl was the 1995 season. At that time, the total annual team salary cap was $37,100,000.

Troy Aikman got paid $3,500,000 in 1995. That turned out to 9.4% of the team's salary cap. That's way cheaper than Dak's current 18% use of the team's salary cap average. Roughly double (2x) the amount % in cap space used compared to Troy Aikman's last Super Bowl winning year, yet the Cowboys still can't even sniff a conference championship game. Totally destroys any narrative about how waaaay overpaying today's QBs is actually helping a team. Instead, it's hurting it.

Call me skeptical, but in the first contract Jones' gave Dak/France: the money, the years and even threw in a No-Trade clause. France can see we: have no alternative, that the Jones have abused the contract and that only realistic way to win now is to extend.

The biggest concern is, if for some reason, Dak/France are looking to hit free agency again (or their negotiation standpoint is they just want a 3/4 year extension), if they do and they consider the $34m salary(and roster bonus) as money due to them then adding in the $62m outstanding CAP money we'll have to yet again overpay in exchange for a longer contract.

The issue with Dak's first contract wasnt the money, it was the leverage they had..... the best weapon in negotiation is to know your opponent and France predicted that Jones wanted to: win now, loves the highlights (which a rookie QB wont give), would restructure to the hilt (and possibly hoping that we wouldnt spend draft picks on a QB as we base improving the team on the draft and holes to fill).

Maybe wrong, but Herbert's deal means nothing to the Dak negotiation, Dak/France have no rush, he gets paid $34m cash in 2024 (as Dak isnt getting cut).

Oh, I see one is instead using 1995 money and not the NFL policies used through out the league now...throw in an average with the salaries handed out now and recheck again...through the current changes.

The Cap% argument is one that France is probably using...."Stephen, Dak's % hit over the next two years is 11.6%, and 23%, now how many QB's have won it all with that hit (Brady, Mahomes and Manning)", daddy's not getting older, tell you what, i'll help out but as we both can see you need to spread the money out over a longer time and my client wants to hit FA one more time.....as he's giving up money and the CAP's predicted to go up to over $300m in 2026.....you'll need to REALLY overpay.
Stephen: "OK"....."Do you want a no trade clause added in?"

Seems that talent are to the front of team contracts now...as was the NBA. That is a modern fixation of star power and sports.

The running backs have felt the brunt in a changing and scoring element added to stardom now. Add in betting around the clock and reappraise.

I enjoy the sport and beyond just a simple function with a cap, am not worried beyond a simple percentage that won't dwarf reality in a fully involved team sport.

Not only does the sport have to be realistic, but challenging. The leader of the team remains the same...the quarterback although.

Be careful as a fan, on who one throws dirt on if expecting to enjoy the sport.

I dont really get what point you're trying to make. My query on the OP is that I dont see how Herbert's contracts has clarified the Dak position and certainly doesnt mean the Jones have gained any leverage. Indeed, Dak/France hold all the cards due to the way the last contracted was negotiated and then 'abused' by subsequent restructures.

He wont be gone. There is not a QB even close to the same caliber in FA and they are not about to waste the primes of the core they have on a rebuild to find a QB, and new young players, to try and win with.

The new Dak-friendly era desires so very little success and glory from the tainted Star.
You got them loving and proclaiming greatness beating an 8-9 playoff team.
Now they're hoping the defense and running game can push Dakko to the NFCCG (In the weakest NFC in a long time) so Dak can stay a little longer.
We have reached new sewer levels when it pertains to what success is today in Dallas and man it smells bad.....like Dak B/O bad!!!!
Just ask Pam....
