Why was Terrell Owens cut?

Me personally I didn't understand because I was pissed that we cut him. But after calming down I have a better understand why Jerry Jones cut Terrell Owens.

Age
Price Tag
Philosophy

Okay I understand Terrell Owens is between 34-36. Okay. And he was going to count 10 mil or little less than that. Okay, why is that okay? because we took a 9.96 mil dollar salary cap hit. Now that the philosophy have changed the Cowboys are going to be running the ball more. Jerry Jones could have renegotiated Terrell Owens contract for less but being that Owens as Jerry Jones say, he did everything ask of him, he didn't want to give him a cut in pay so he probably figure since T.O. is a hell of a player with a whole lot of talent he could go somewhere else and get a good deal. With the philosopy that is set in place now, the Cowboys will be able to spread the ball around more and use all three runningbacks. And just imagine Cowboys using all three running backs and spreading the ball around, how good your two premire wide receivers going to do.

I believe Roy Williams played a hell of a part in Terrell Owens being cut. But my only question is, how about Terrell Owens want to come to the Cowboys for a less price and he buys into the system, then what? Fans?

He is gone ...... its over.

Let it go.

Seriously...

I'm trying to forget all about the move but these threads keep reminding me of the questions surrounding it.

Make it stop.

some obvious reasons (to anyone with a clue or not a complete homer)...

#1 he's a team destroyer & team cancer
publically & privately disrespected coaches
disrespected probowl, well respected TEAM players (jason, etc.)
getting old & lost some burst
easily manhandled by single bump coverage
stone hands
not a winner
we lost with him and his contract, i like our chances w/o him
not clutch
$$$ paid to him is a waste of dollars
stunts growth of entire offense and offensive coaches
the NFL is not fantasy football or video games
Romo needs to be our offensive leader, not this punk.

buh-bye LOSER.

The price tag had nothing to do with it IMO. We are still paying him like 9 mil or something this year if i'm not mistaken.

From what some of the other guys said, we're not "paying him" that 9 mil. It's just the hit we take against the cap by letting him go. I was kinda worried about that too. If we're paying him 9 mil to add to whatever he makes for his new team that would be highway robbery on his part.

TO would never be able to accept his inevitable decline. He may or may not have lost a step but he will soon and he will not be able to accept his declining stature with grace. He would make a terrific No. 2 but would never be able to accept this role and will always make excuses for why he can't produce.

Jerry Rice played into his late 30's but his game wasn't predicated on speed the way TO is. Rice had other intangibles that allowed him to be great and accept a lesser role as he aged.

TO is declining wether it is obvious or not. JJ knew it would get ugly so he did what he had to do.

Paying him and taking a cap hit are the same thing in my eyes. I could care less if he sees a dollar of it.

I still think we should have kept him, to a point. But it's a done deal, he's gone. Time to move on. I'm not wasting any brain cells on it, they are too valuable.

Besides, that is what beer is for....:beer1:

rumor has it TO would not have made the final 53, so they let him try to catchh on with another team before it was too late.

Again, if he wasn't released he would have been owed a roster bonus of around 3-5 million. It isn't just about the salary cap as far as it effects Jerry's pocket.

If Jones and his staff believed TO was still playing at the same level and not causing problems in the lockerroom, a $3-5 million bonus wouldn't be an issue. If it were, Jerry could clear up that much cash by getting rid of other less talented players.

He was insisting the ball be forced to him, instead of whoever was open. Making a stink about it when it didnt happen. Romo and Garrett trying to placate the guy was making the offense ineficient. When it didnt happen TO was undermining his QB and coordinator thereby killing morale and causing desention.

It's the off-season. It's not like there's much else out there to talk about :)

Age: If Jerry released Owens b/c he was serious about making this a younger team, I could support that. But signing a 33 year old Brookings and (if you believe the speculation) considering a 32year old Torry Holt and keeping a 33year old Ellis on the roster and bringing in a 36 year old Jon Kitna... well, I don't see a committment to youth there.

Philosophy: I guess Terrell Owens didn't make it clear enough that all he wants to do is win win win. He's never come out and said something like "if losing a football game is the worst thing that ever happens to me...". There has never been talk about Owens having poor practice habits. So this can't be it...

Price Tag: It's the only real logical reason left... Jerry better hope people buy up those Roy11, Witten and Romo jerseys next season :)

The simple fact is T.O., with or w/o any of his own doing, is still a lockerroom cancer. It's bigger than he is now. Even if he is on his best behavior, a team still has to tolerate the circus that follows him relentlessly. It wears on a team's chemistry and tugs at the seams of the team atmosphere, constantly. It (he) becomes the one and only story of a football team and Owens is not the best candidate to handle that type of pressure 24/7.
When you add that to the fact that he no longer has the reliable hands he once did and is an old player impeding the development of any future youth at the position... it's a wise choice to cut your losses and move on.

Jerry Jones is smart enough to know that regardless of whatever, it is always good business to portray any "parting of ways" as a positive experience and say nothing but good things about the relationship in order to prevent any future conflict and to move forward as quickly and smoothly as possible.

That's it. No more. No less.
